The Fight Within

Chapter Three

*Rick's POV*

We all felt the power surge. It was like being punched in the head but much harder, the pain was instant and our mind link got cut off for a few minuets so nobody knew what happened but we all had a feeling about what caused it. It has only happened onces and the last time it happened was with me.

The new kid is at the first stage of getting her powers and seeing as even the teachers felt this surge she is bloody powerful. After a few minuets we all got a mind link message from Miles,

"Gabbie is okay, I think. She had a small power surge during science but it suddenly hit her and she blacked out. Troy was trying to scan her mind to see what she was feeling but she was blocking her out. She's been through some s**t, her walls are high. Don't think anyone could break them"

The link was full of dead air. Nobody has ever managed to block their gardians during a power surge. It's the moment where your mind is at it's weakest the only way someone could do that if something has affected them so bad that their walls are always up. What the hell happened to her?

Someone had to say something so I decided it would be me,

"Did any signs of power show up?"

Troy was the one to reply, he sounded tired even in his mind.

"Yeah she kept saying 'It burns' but don't think she realized plus just before she blacked out there was ice on her skin. So I'm guessing shes a duo elemental. Fire and ice."

"Wait she made it by herself?"

"Seems that way" There was lots of gasps in the classroom, fire and ice? I swear that's impossible. Her fire would just meant the ice or the ice would put out the flame. Maybe it was a fluke. But if it wasn't it means that there's finally someone who is just like me well not just like me but you get what I mean. She might be joining the training lessons sooner than we thought seeing as she has had two surges in one day, the first day that she has been here too it has to be a record seriously.

Jamie looked at me with excitement emanating from every pore, "HA I told you I told you Rick. Did you believe me? No! Hahahaha" He carried on laughing to himself like a mad man but what he said next surprised me, "Do you think her Power Pair is here?" A Power Pair is basically a soul mate, thats the main aim of this school because many elementals have more control over their powers once they find their other half but sadly you don't know about your other half until your power set in. I've had my powers for over a year but still no luck. Jamie however has found her soul mate and they are amazing together. He is over eager about EVERYTHING and has the attention span of a chipmunk whereas she is calm and quite. Very different but the calm each other down if you get what I mean.

Maybe Gabbie is my other half! That would be amazing if she is but I will need to see her first because I've only heard about her and fortunately for me I have English with all the norms, including her.

"Rick can you be Gabbie's watcher in English. She needs to be watched at all times just in case." It was Miss. Hariss this time so I just sent back a curt yes while I headed towards my English class.

Leaning against the wall was one of the most beautiful girls that I have ever seen. With honey blonde hair that came to her mid back, a small petite body that wasn't too skinny or too cuddly, and a heart shaped face with emerald green eyes. She was standing with Miles and Troy just nodding and smiling even though they seemed to be asking her questions. Why didn't she reply? Miles noticed me watching them in confusion so he mind-linked me,

"She's a mute but selectively, Miss.Hariss said she hasn't spoke for nearly two months but she said two words to us today. It's a big step okay so don't force her"

"I won't but any idea why she's mute?"

"We asked about her family and all she said they were gone before closing us off so I'm going to take a wild guess and say it's something to do with them"

It wasn't unusual for a student to have baggage, whatever they're feeling could have actually triggered the powers if it was extreme enough. But being a mute? That's new.

The bell soon rang leaving Gabbie alone in the corridor as she looked around frantically in fear as if someone was going to get her any second because there was no one around her. I was going to go up to her but the teacher showed up and started to begin the lesson by shuffling us into the classroom.

The lesson went shockingly slow with me just watching Gabbie in case she had another attack. She just kept wincing every now and then but that was about it thankfully otherwise explaining why almost everyone in the class winces when she does would be a complicated and awkward conversation. She will only believe us once she gets her own powers.

Towards the end of the lesson she started sweating, her breathing increased and her pupils dilated to twice their size. If what they said is true about her being a fire user that this is only the beginning for her. She looked terrified, she eventually out her hand up. When the teacher looked at her she got a white board and pen out of her bag and began to write.

"Please may I go to the school nurse?" She showed her board to the teacher with her head cocked slightly to the side and pink rosy cheeks that showed her embarrassment. The teacher only nodded while eyeing me with a wary gaze as if to say that I have to follow her so I nodded in reply. When she left the classroom she sprinted towards the nurse's office in a frenzy as if a mad man was after her. As she saw the door Gabbie knocked and almost fell into the room as the nurse opened the door. The nurse noticed me but didn't show any emotion towards so that she didn't tick Gabbie off about me following her.

The door sooned closed with a soft tap with murmering voices behind it but sadly it didn't last that long. 

Gabbie let out a blood curdling scream so I barged through the door to see her surrounded in a ball of fire, her scream soon became muffled as ice froze over the surface. Thick and solid. She soon opened her eyes and gazed in wonder at the sight before her, she slowly reached towards the flame with her finger and the fire parted where her finger touched, she cocked her head to the side as if she was in thought. She took a deep breath, closed her eyes and placed her hands on front of her. The nurse and I looked at each other in amazement, nobody has ever mastered their powers so quick if she was going to do what we thought she would do... Well lets say that she's going to need some training.

I shook my head as I waited for her to do something, I was right. She clenched her hands into fists and the ice shattered into a thousand pieces before melting away, the flame absorbed into her skin and she was left a little burnt around the edges. But what amazed me the most was that when she looked into my eyes I felt a but on my heart and my chest started to burn with lust, love and pride towards this powerful creature before me. By the look on her face I guess she felt the same but her eyes were filled with sadness, fear and...and a haunting look that I couldn't even describe as a feeling, what the hell happened to her? Worry began to creep into my features and she put her shields back up. As she did so she surrounded herself with ice and a burning black fire that emitted feelings of sorrow and death.

I just found my Power Pair, and shut me out. Worst feeling ever.
