Chapter 10: Settled In

It almost feels like a surreal dream as I sit at the breakfast table with my family, and Jake. I hoped, but realistically I didn't think I was ever going to see any of their faces again. It almost seems too good to be true, or maybe I lost faith completely and expected everything to get worse and not better.

"This is the best fruit I've had in a long time," Jake smiles from ear to ear.

"Thank you; we all pitch in in this town," Gene's proud smile surfaces before he picks up an apple wedge off his plate.

"So how did you two meet?" Miles asks.

"It was at a bar. I was spending the night in town. It was four months ago," I reply. I was trying to push through it all and block out the memories and pain, but it wasn't working how I wanted it to.

Jake helped me take out a few guys that weren't going to let me leave the bar. We talked all night about random stuff, and our life before the blackout. He was just going from town to town trying to find a nice fit. It was like we knew each other even though I'd never seen met him before; I recognised him on a different level. We just clicked and decided we were a good team.

"Some guys were hassling her--" Jake starts.

"Now that is the start of an epic romance story," Gene chuckles and I can't help but smile in response. In fact I've done so much smiling in the past 24 hours that I think I sprained my face muscles.

"We'll see," Jake smirks.

"You know Halstead was sad to see you go," Gene says.

"Really? But I'd barely started my training."

"Training?" Miles asks.

"For the Rangers," Gene replies, "He said you were already better than half of his skilled men," Gene chuckled slightly.

"That sounds about right," Miles doesn't look impressed.

"You'd make a great ranger," Jake smiles encouragingly but Miles still has the irritated look on his face.

He keeps forgetting I'm not the little girl he left behind when he enlisted into the army. We'd seen each other over the years before the blackout but he's always looked at me the same; like I'm a child that needs protection.

"Thank you," I reply.

It only takes us a few weeks to get settled, and Jake is quick to adapt; helping out any way he can while I help out and talk Grey into letting me work by his side. Thanks to Halstead it didn't take too much convincing.

"We need to talk," Miles sits at the breakfast table across from me. Jake is off helping a group of guys who are mending broken walls and floors while Gene and Rachel are floating around nearby.

"Okay," I stop picking at a crusty bread roll.

"I'm leaving today."

"I'm sorry did you just say you're leaving?!"

Miles nods, "And you're staying here."

"You don't get to make that decision for me."

"I mean it Adrianna. There are still people out there that would do anything to get their revenge, and I can't risk it. Especially now that I know you're safe."
