"Don't let your anger drive away a true friend."

Young Sherry was stooping over Sir Keith’s still form. “He’s not breathing; I think we’ve already lost him.”

“You and what ye think, Sherry, just bring him over.” Ryan ordered. “Over here!” He stated when they passed by him with Sir Keith lying on his Warrior. “He will ride with me_ that way; we’ll get to the Castle fast.” Ryan explained but when they hesitated, glided softly down and took Sir Keith off Warrior and put him on his own.

“But twill slow ye down.” Dan said, not looking at him.

“I might not take Blackmore’s assignment serious but I ken what I’m doing.” Ryan answered stiffly then mounted behind Sir Keith’s still form and rode off.
“Bring the boar with ye!” His voice carried back to them.

When he was certain they could not see his shadow even, Ryan straightened and moved swiftly among the woods and was suddenly at the Castle gates then halted to a trot.

The gates opened even before he got there and he rode straight to the front doors instead of the stables.

Ben rushed over to help him but Ryan had already got down and was carrying Sir Keith inside when he got there. “Wow!” He blinked several times until a guard shouted at him and he took the horse’s reins and pulled it away towards the stables.

“Where’s the physician?” Ryan asked Nick who was approaching from the direction of the hall. He did not wait for him to answer and was already starting towards the royal sick bay.

“The _ there…” Nick stammered then rushed back in the direction he had come from.

“Is he really dead?”

The physician said nothing, his hands feeling Sir Keith’s wrist for a vein. He bent over his chest and after a while got up. “Eliza!”

“Aye mister!” Eliza rushed into the room, wiping her damp hands on her white apron.

“Wash and clean your father’s wounds.” He told her then turned to Ryan. “I’m afraid, he is.” The physician finally answered and Ryan exhaled an impatient breath.

“What happened?” Lord Blackmore’s voice reached them before he appeared in the doorway. He moved out of the way when Mrs Keith’s piercing cry sounded behind him.

“What happened? Mrs Keith repeated, looking at Ryan. Tell me!”

“We went boar hunting, ma.”

They all with the exception of Ryan turned to see a panting Dan standing in the doorway with Sir MacCoff.

“Is he dead, Mr Faire?” Mrs Keith was asking the physician who looked away. “Eliza dear?”

“I’m afraid so, ma.” Eliza answered slowly.

Ryan swiftly caught Mrs Keith before she fell on the ground and hugged her close, letting his warmth prevent her from passing out. The rest looked on, stunned into silence.

“Pray lad, let go.” Mrs Keith’s voice croaked, beating faintly at Ryan’s chest. He let go but still let an arm remain about her.

“Are ye feeling fine, ma?” Dan was peering at his mother.

“Aye lad, I willnae faint away if that’s what ye fear_ but is my Keith really gone?”

“I tried to talk him out of going, came in Sir MacCoff then he frowned at Dan. But when I couldn’t, I thought ye would, lad.”

“I also tried, uncle but pa wouldnae listen to me_”

“O my Keith!” Mrs Keith pushed Eliza aside, wrapping her arms about Sir Keith.

“I guess we have another funeral to see to.” Lord Blackmore uttered and started out. “Dan stay with your mother today and Ryan, come with me.”

“Are ye still going to let us go on that trip?”

Lord Blackmore turned then. “I have already sent a message that we cannot make it today but we have a funeral to plan for. Come on,” he urged and started out again.

“Go on, I’ll stay with them.” Sir MacCoff said and Ryan unwillingly followed Lord Blackmore out.
