THE EYE OF THE woods stared back at Lorelai

THE EYE OF THE woods stared back at Lorelai. She hadn't moved yet, her feet planted on the line where grass faded into mud, where trees began to clump, where the woodland creatures hid.

Lorelai's life had molded to take a new shape now that the Cullens were gone. Every decision was made based on their absence. She stopped going to the hospital for her check-ups. She broke every routine she used to have with Jasper. For a while, the avoidance was her crutch. Now she was realizing that no matter how much she said she was fine, she was avoiding every memory she had of them. It was time to move on from that.

Today was her chance. She hadn't been in the forest since Jasper abandoned her, and today, she would take back her love for nature walks by herself.

It was a little stupid. After all, prior to befriending the undead, she spent most of her time wandering through the woods. Nature always made her feel safe, content. She liked how empty it was. No one could stare at her there. No one could judge her or shun her. The trees did not discriminate. So long as she respected them, the woods welcomed her.

The forest was meant to be her safe haven. Yet she'd neglected walking through it for months because every time she looked into that peaceful corner of Forks, she thought of the Cullens.

Despite the small tugging on her heart that told her that the Cullens would one day reappear in her life, Lorelai needed to move on. The only way to do so entirely was to act as though their disappearance didn't hurt her. She had to live life as she did before, of course with some altercations.

The last time she was surrounded by nature, her best friend abandoned her. Still, Lorelai was optimistic for once in her life. She knew one thing and one thing only would help her finally move on. She had to go back into the forest. She had to reclaim her once normal life—

Her phone buzzed. A text from her father.
