Chapter 1: Jane Grey aka Jinx

13 years later:

13 year-old Jane Grey sat in her room. She had recently re-decorated her bedroom. What used to be a room, (with light blue walls, decorated with violet flowers, turquoise curtains, and a double bed with light pink covers); was now a room that had walls painted in a dark, Gothic shade of purple, black velvet curtains, a large mirror attached to the walls, and a double bed that now had black covers, decorated with white cobwebs. The room gave a depressive vibe, perfect for her mood.

Jane, sat in her room, feeling depressed. It had been 13 years since she was found by Helen, on the doorstep of Wimbledon orphanage; over the years the gothic girl had gotten to know the other children, in Wimbledon orphanage, who had had similar experiences to her own, or were either run a ways, or disowned by their parents.

Jane was one of the eldest amongst all the children, in the orphanage. Although she was one of the eldest, she was also the most unlucky. Unlike most of the other  residents, the dark haired girl was rather clumsy, she tripped numerous times on a daily basis; this resulted to either a broken arm, or sprained ankle at least once a month.

Unfortunately for her, she often found herself as the victim of pranks by the younger children, whether it was waking up to find worms in her bed, that was originally intended for another child, or having a shower with shampoo that was actually blue hair dye. Jane was the victim.

Her constant bad luck led her to be called “Jinx”, by all the children in the orphanage and even he care workers. Some might be offended by this nickname, but to the Goth like girl it was rather comical, that was until now.

For, as long as she could remember, Jinx's bad luck, had not been a problem anywhere, except . . . School. She really lived up to her name, when it came to schools; she had a tendency to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. This resulted, to Jinx, being expelled from many schools, in the area.

Most of the reasons for her expulsions was because she was being “aggressive towards other students” or “constantly disrespecting the teachers”, it wasn’t Jinx’s fault that her luck lead her to walk into the middle of a fight, nor was it her fault that another student had offended her, and when she defended herself, the teacher misunderstood, the situation.

This unlucky teenager had recently been expelled at Barnet, for “misusing the lab equipment, and setting a fellow student’s hair on fire”, it wasn’t Jinx’s fault, that her luck lead her to trip, while holding a lit match that unfortunately landed on another students hair.  Jane couldn’t do anything about; her luck was against her when it came to school.

The care workers of Wimbledon Orphanage thought that she would deliberately get herself expelled, and punished her, hoping that Jinx would "understand, that these actions came with a consequence.”

The punishments were usually doing all the chores, in the orphanage, or having no allowance. The most popular punishment was getting grounded, which was her unfortunate punishment, at the moment.

Jinx, sat in her room, thinking over, the many failed attempts; she had done, to explain why she was expelled from all these schools, to her care worker. When she heard a knock on the door.

“Jinx! Jinx! Helen wants to see you now! Jinx open up!” that was the unmistakable voice of little Annabelle.

Annabelle was new to the orphanage, and had formed an instant friendship with all of the children. She had long curly black hair, and ocean blue eyes that would melt even the coldest of hearts; she was like a sister to the somewhat gothic teenager.

Reluctantly Jinx slowly got up from her bed and opened the door. There standing by her door, was Annabelle in a light blue dress with an encouraging smile on her face. Jinx took her hand and walked to Helen’s office.

Helen was the care worker of Wimbledon orphanage and had tried to help Jinx to the best of her abilities in finding a family and a school, where she would be happy.  As the two girls got closer to the office, they were stopped by the other children, who whispered "good luck" to Jinx.

Jinx soon reached the office and opened the door, the dark haired girl was ready for the usual shouts and demands for an explanation, but to her surprise, she received none of the above.

Instead, Helen said “I think you should look at this.” In an encouraging tone, and handed her a violet coloured envelope that was addressed to Jane Grey (Jinx) Wimbledon Orphanage. Surprised the dark haired girl opened the letter...
