Chapter Two: The First Date.

After rushing to get my things together, I find myself seated in the Dean’s office at Jameson City College, waiting for my schedule to process. The woman sitting before me; Mrs. Abigale Woodshaw. She has glasses that hang to low on the bridge of her nose, wrinkles covering her round face, with small light blue eyes and golden straight blond hair. Her nasal passages must be blocked today, because every word she has said to me sounds like she’s plugging her nose. I can’t help but laugh on the inside with each noise.

“Okay Reeves, you’re going to be able to attend your Human sexuality class, your Biology 1A, and the General Psychology. As for the work on campus, your father has put in a very good word for you and he is highly respected here, I would like you to go to the human resources department and get more information on that.”  She squeezes the tip of her nose lightly and sniffs in.

“Thank you for all your help.” I say shaking her hand after getting my schedule from her. The laugh trying to break free from my lungs is deep and causes my voice to shake.

In a town this small we are lucky to have a college campus that we don’t have to drive to far for. It holds a little over five-hundred students at this time. The school stands towering with large white pillars, brick walls, and the largest building being the library. The class rooms are lined up row by row and the insides are able to hold at least sixty-two students per unit. We are lucky if the classes even fill up half the desks available.

The Forum Hall building, I walk over to now, is where two of my classes will be held on Monday of next week. The excitement of it all is setting in as I run my hand along the classroom door. The purpose of my walk around campus is to make sure I am able to find my classes and not look like a chicken with its head cut off the day it begins. I will know a few people from my high school classes and my chances of getting a class with one or two of them, are pretty up there in a small college; I’m not too worried.

I finish my walk through the campus to the human resources department and go inside, the air smells of lavender, and the lighting is very dim. I ask the woman seated at the front desk, “Hello, my name is Amelia Reeves and I’m here to ask about a job position with my father.”

She looks up at me with a warm smile and says, “Reeves? I know your father, Jackson Reeves very well. He is very well liked here and we shouldn’t have any problem figuring out the position that you desire. Please take a seat while I pull in our records.” She lifts her hand to me showing me where the seating is.

After leaving the college, I’m driving down Main Street, I pull over turning off my car and taking my cell phone out to call Crystal. It’s thankfully not a busy day down here so it is easy to find parking. I take my time scrolling through my contacts till I find her. I roll my window down letting the nice breeze come in cooling my car.

“Hey are you going to be coming over to Joey’s house? It’s time to celebrate!” Crystal exclaims.

I take a moment contemplating on my answer. The thought of seeing Joey after school was one I’ve been avoiding. We share a long history starting when we were in freshman year of high school. He was the charming football jock; who took a liking to me for being the only female on the team. I had plenty of time to find men at my school attractive from being around them in all of the sports; most of them winding up being friends.

Joey was different, he was charming, and very pleasant to be around. He would have been my first… everything. But I stopped it before it progressed passed second base. I didn’t want to disappoint my mother, who always told me it was best to hold on to my virginity for my marriage. Joey was very disappointed in my decision and his reaction was to start ignoring me completely. After senior year I felt like he had forgotten about me entirely.
