Chapter One: The first encounter.
The salon is chilling to be in, not like its usual warm environment, the leather grey chair I’m sitting in is causing goose bumps to rise up my back. My best friend, Crystal Anderson is placing some of my hair in to clips and parting it into different strands. She’s been cutting hair for a while, she begged me to let her cut my hair; for my birthday today. It only took seconds for me to lose the battle of stubbornness and be placed in the chair with much reluctance. She has always had a way of making me try new things; including getting this hair cut!
She’s been my best friend since Elementary school, she has always wanted to change my tom-boy qualities, into her girly Barbie- doll look, and I couldn’t damn- well refuse a FREE birthday haircut from my best friend; now could I? So, yes. I agreed to it. I’ll now never be able to get her off my back about doing my hair for every occasion!
“Oh, you have such boring hair! The way it flops and falls is just so…so unappealing. It’s no wonder you don’t have a boyfriend! Let’s spice it up!” She giggles. I watch as my very own life-sized Barbie pinches her lips together at me.
“You’re a bitch!” I retort smiling from ear to ear.
“But you love me!” She toys shaking her head from side to side.
“It’s not because of my hair, that I don’t have a boyfriend. I just don’t find anyone here APPEALING.” I smirk doing air quotes.
“You just need to date older men! It’s a good thing you’re going to college soon!” She squeals tugging out a strand of my hair, “Okay so let’s take these strands that are falling into your face and layer them.” She says grabbing a comb and a style razorblade out of her apron.
I watch as my long brown waves hit the glittered pink salon floor. I exhale deeply; there’s no turning back now. She moves in front of me blocking my view from the mirror. I can see her flat model abs flexing under her tight hot-pink army print apron. I scowl staring at it. I work out every day for my flat abs and she walks two minutes to work from our apartment, with no working out necessary. My envy level is sky high.
Crystal bends over lowering her face to my eye level. I stare at her vibrant flawless make up, it’s covering her bright pink tinted cheeks, the joy springing from inside I can almost see in her pours. The uncontrolled giggles she keeps making have me smiling with a feeling of pleasure. Oh, the things I do to see her happy! Tilting her head to one side she squeezes her eyebrows together focusing on the task at hand.
“You ready to go out tonight with your new hot look?” She asks flipping her bleach blond ringlets that curl in spirals down her back to one side, another thing to be jealous about, as she moves behind me. The heels she is wearing making her tower over me. She’s just a few inches taller than myself at 5’5, but you’d never guess it in her eight-inch heels.
I smile looking into the mirror at my new self. My new haircut falls in small waves cupping my sun kissed olive toned cheeks; my hair is not naturally wavy, but after Crystal tonight it might be. My large green eyes staring back at me covered with makeup. I feel pretty hot tonight! It pays off- sometimes- having a friend whose mother owns a Salon and Beauty Parlor. It just also happened to be located down the main strip here in our small beach town.
She brushes the hair off me removing the hot pink cover. I stand up looking down at my little black dress, dusting off some lose strands of hair. A smile is plastered largely across my face, I do have to admit it is nice to feel like I can have any guy I want tonight, the confidence looking good and feeling good about your self can bring is extraordinary.
