05. chapter five : captured on film
❝And we'd just love to take a look. You know, as... connoisseurs of art.❞
BARB 'S SUDDEN DESIRE TO BE M.I.A created a sense of tenseness in the air that left much to think about. Estelle knew they had to wait 48 hours to officially say she was missing, but it still didn't feel right. Not after her weird nightmare and that thing that came out of the ditch. Not after she heard Barb call for help. She tensed, shoulders pulled tight with her whole arm squeezing Nancy in a death grip from where it was wrapped around her shoulder. She tried to make light conversations about school work and the game that was about to start not long from now; she tried to take away from the fact that both girls knew something is up. And not just with Barb.
"Hey, guys. What's going on?" Estelle called, releasing Nancy from her side hug walk as they approached the odd group. Confusion is what she first felt, staring at the Byers boy who looked like he'd rather go hide in a ditch far away from this situation. Sure, Estelle knew the kid was a bit weird but Steve and Tommy didn't need to do antagonize the poor guy. At least — that's what she felt before she saw the photos.
"This creep was spying on us last night. He was probably gonna save this one for later." Carol sounded smug as she passed the picture down towards Nancy. Estelle glanced down at the picture, her stomach beginning to feel queasy at the grossness of it all
"What the hell," she gasped, passing the glossy pictures to Nancy, who let out a shocked noise at the sight of herself and Steve in various states of undress.
Tommy. Nancy. Carol. Steve. All of them were photographed, clearly enjoying the past night unaware that someone was lurking in the shadows just watching them. An itch began to crawl under her skin, one that pulsed with nervousness and discomfort. Apparently, there's no safe space in the town of Hawkins anymore. As she stared at the few pictures she held in her hands, Estelle noticed that none of them included her. Or if they did, the main focus definitely wasn't her.
Estelle made her way over to Tommy, wrapping herself in his embrace. The pictures in her hands forgotten if only for a moment as they got slightly crumpled in her fists. He carded a hand through her hair quickly, before settling it on her shoulder. They glanced at the crumpled photos again, searching for nothing in particular. Carol glanced over their shoulders, curious about all the pictures he had taken.
She turned to watch Steve as he talked about the Byers boy, getting closer and closer. "See, you can tell that he knows it was wrong, but Man, that's the thing about perverts; it's hardwired into 'em. You know, they just can't help themselves. So we'll just have to take away his toy."
He turned back and grabbed the camera that had been lying on the hood of the beat up car. Despite his threatening attitude, he handled the camera with a sort of care. He cradled it in his hand, staring down Jonathan as he held is most precious object.
