"You know time crawls on when you're waiting for the song to start,
So dance alone to the beat of your heart."

Katniss POV (and will be unless stated otherwise)

Sighing, I grab my MI backpack that's loaded with text books and stagger out the front door of my apartment block into the chilly New York autumn air where Madge is already waiting outside for me.

Madge is my best friend and she belongs to one of the richest families that reside in the city. Unlike what you'd expect, she is not uptight in the slightest and in no way does she flash her money around, she does the opposite of that actually, she hides it. She shops where everyone else shops, not in Chanel or Prada like she could afford but in Abercrombie and Fitch or Forever 21. I don't know why she does this, if I had money like her I'd certainly shop in high end places; she says she just wants to fit in but this is high school we're talking about so "fitting in" is underrated.

'Hey Katniss! Ready for your first practice?' Madge finishes her sentence in a wink. She's talking about volleyball practice, the team I have to join for my extra-curricular. For the first three years of high school I'd avoided any form of social activity but now I'm going into my senior year, I need a good college application and as I much as I want to deny it, being in a team does look good on paper.

I'd chosen volleyball because Madge is actually captain of the team is year and she assures me that the team is like a family and that I'll fit right in. Yeah... Right..... Since I've never fitted in anywhere I find this very hard to believe. But volleyball is by far my favourite sport so maybe it'll be fun. I'm pretty good at it too, the coach has been begging me to join for a while now.

'I don't really have a choice but to be ready do I?' I reply to Madge, flicking my braid off my shoulder.

Madge rolled her eyes at my negative attitude. 'Oh stop complaining, you might really enjoy it!'

I'm about to retort back to her something about how I'm never going to enjoy being social when a red high-heeled stiletto stomps on my charcoal grey converse, distracting me.

'Get out of my way, Katpiss!'

I'm about to go and slap Glimmer O'Matthews around her pretty little face but Madge senses my movement and blocks me, causing Glimmer to sneer at me before flicking her blonde curls and sashaying past.

I glare after her with a look of utter distaste and hatred. She's always hated me and I've always hated her, it's just the way it was. I have no clue what brought on her despise for me but I have plenty of reasons why I can't even look at her without wanting to throw up.

First is the way she acts, walking around as if she owns everyone and everything. Her Dad is a top business man and she was most likely born with a Gold American Express card in her mouth. She always gets what she wants, whether its from her parents or from teachers, just because she has this sickly sweet smile and fake charming act. She's dead pretty too but God does she know it; she can't help but to glance in every shiny or reflective surface she passes, even if its just the back of her ice cream spoon.

Her favourite hobby, aside from cheerleading obviously, is making people jealous. It doesn't matter if its because of her clothes or her hair or her perfect boyfriend, as long as people are green eyed with envy at her, she doesn't care. It's safe to say all the boys positively swoon when she stalks past and probably would trade both of their arms to be able to sleep with her but as for the girls.... Well, aside from her little band of followers, we all want to throw her into an acid vat, each for our own reasons of course.

'Kat, you can stop glaring now, the hurricane of bitch-y-ness has passed.' Madge informs me, snapping her manicured fingers in front of my face.

'Do you know what I'd pay to see that girl with a knife in her back?' I muttered darkly as we made our way to our lockers which happened to be side by side.
