This was Mr. Palmer's gym class. Now, he did not care if you are dying, if your not doing what you are supposed to do then he'd make you run laps.
"Everyone, in your seats! Today we are going to do the pacer. If you can get past forty times going back and forth across the gym then you will get a one hundred. You only get one of two grades zero or one hundred. Now, if you are to challenge yourself then every number after one hundred is an extra point on your grade."
Running, my number one specialty. I am so glad that it is running because I haven't done it in a while and I am very good at it.
"If you get below forty then you are going to stay after school and run extra laps. Any questions, good. Now, get yourselves in line and get ready."
I got to the very back of the gym. Most people stood with their friends but it's not like they are going to be able to talk to them while running. Alright Akane, this is the last thing you deal with today. Just this, and you can go in your room. The day is almost over.
"There is going to be a man speaking and he will tell you the instructions."
"This the the pacer, in this there will be two bells one that sounds like this... and like this. Each time you hear the bell it marks as your time to run. If you run and you are not on the other side by the time the next bell rings then it means you're finished. Only go when the bell rings."
Come on Akane you got this.
"If you hear the second bell that you heard then that marks as the next level. Everytime you hear that second bell that means you have passed to the next level. Each level the bell will ring faster and faster. The test will start in a little bit.
"Any questions? Good."
"The test will begin on the word start. On your mark, get ready, START."
The first twenty were very easy. Too easy to where I could walk and then barely jog, well that was for me. There were several people who already got out because they had asthma. It must have been really hard for them.
"20,...21,...22,..."
Just breathe in and out. I have to get past one hundred. I need the extra credit. You got this. You can do it. Believe in yourself.
"35,...36,...37,...38,...39,..."
Once it got to fourty I heard a bunch of people fall to the ground. We have not been that far into it, I don't understand why they are already tired. I looked up from the ground to see that it was mostly girls and among them was Macy gasping for breath. No surprise there. I was not even close to being tired, there are several girls left but it was mostly boys. I wonder who can go the farthest.
"59,...60,...61,..."
"Yo loser you gonna give up?"
I looked to see that there was someone beside me.
"No? I guess I am going to have to make you."
I did not understand what he meant until he did it. He pushed me and I fell to the ground. There was laughter everywhere. No, I can't end it like this. I instantly got up and sprinted to the line, The bell rang. Now I am going to have to do more work.
"Not giving up?"
"Jaydon, just leave me" I took a couple of breaths to gain my breathing back " alone before you end up stopping."
Man I am out of beath. Breathe in, breathe out. Come on, keep going. Push yourself.
"Huh, think your a big shot?"
