The Doctrine of Baptisms is one of the fundamental teachings of the scriptures that every believer must understand in their journey of maturity. A good understanding of the different baptisms and how it applies to our daily lives as spiritual men and women will bring more light into our study of the scriptures and our interpretations of the word. These truths are not just mental assets but they influence how we conduct ourselves and how we relate with other believers.
The Baptism into Christ for instance unites all believers into one family; the most important unifying force in Christianity is our belief in the coming, death and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The doctrinal differences in what to wear, or what to eat or when to worship and other trivial issues are not potent enough to divide us. When we are baptized into Christ, we become one in Him though we are different members but of the same body.
The Baptism into water is symbolic of what has happened to us spiritually. It is a symbol of our death, burial and resurrection with Christ our Lord. This act reveals our participation with Christ in whatever he went through and also accomplished. By this the believer can say "I am crucified with Christ" and the other can continue "I am buried and resurrected with Him." these are important revelations that most believers have not appreciated. This baptism also gives the opportunity for a public proclamation of our salvation.
The Baptism of the Spirit is one of the all-important doctrines of the Bible. This truth has started several movements that are still ongoing. It is the foundation of modern Christianity; though it has brought divisions because of lack of proper understanding it still remains an important pillar of truth that every child of God must thoroughly understand. The endowment of power of the Holy Spirit is the life line of a successful Christian living. The more empowered we are the more we are able to live as perfect examples and witnesses of our Lord Jesus. Without the enablement of the Spirit we would not be able to please the Father as we ought to. The day the Holy Ghost rested upon Jesus, the Father in heaven said in loud voice, this is my son, in whom I am well pleased. The Baptism of the Spirit becomes the door into the supernatural and the tool by which we can please God. Also the Lord instructed his disciples to tarry until they have received the Spirit, or better still until they have been baptized in the Spirit. Without the Baptism of the Spirit and its accompanying endowment with power, there will be no way to advance the kingdom of God through the ministration of the Gospel. We cannot be effective witnesses without this experience and the kingdom of God cannot advance without it. This calls for a second look into what this truth means and how we can agree and connect for our blessings.
