Once in the dining hall, Sleptaas was curiously appalled by the complete segregation of the three groups. She scanned the dining hall, looking for Twixy, who she found sitting alone in the corner of the mages’ section, talking quietly to Axe. Sleptaas also saw the looks Twixy received, and shook her head sadly at the stupidity of teenagers. As she sauntered down the row of tables she suddenly became aware of the eyes of boys and girls alike. She heard whispers grow louder as she passed, full of rumours she knew were not true.
Over at one of the mages’ tables, Marius was boasting about his conquest of Sleptaas and Twixy, saying he’d screwed them both in the library just minutes before lunch. The redheaded mage caught Sleptaas’ eye and suddenly paled. She smirked at him and his band of mages, tempted to hurl a throwing knife just inches from his head, but she thought otherwise and walked on.
A wolf whistle caught her attention. She looked for the source, and was greeted by three golden-haired paladin boys sitting on a table. The tallest of the three jumped down and smiled crookedly at her, his blonde hair a little shaggy around his face which was tanned to perfection.
“Hey there, gorgeous!” His bright green eyes drifted lazily up and down her body, resting mostly on the intimate areas.
“How about once you’re out of school, honey,” she looked him over. “Then maybe you’ll be in my league.” Sleptaas started to walk away, but he had other plans. His arm wrapped around her waist, possessively grabbing her and pulling her to him.
“Why don’t you stick around awhile longer, babe?”
“Sorry, but I don’t have time to babysit,” she pulled herself away, wrenching his arm hard enough that he yelped loudly, attracting the attention of the whole room, not that it wasn’t already on them. She walked off towards the rogue tables and sat down at the closest one. A brightly dressed male rogue leaned back in his chair and eyed her curiously.
“Sleptaas, ain’t it?” His lower speech implied he was from Felbridge or at least around there.
The assassin smiled. “I sure am.”
“Oh that’s--”
A loud outburst interrupted his statement, and everyone’s attention went to the mage tables. Sleptaas was instantly on her feet and over to the situation in a matter of seconds. Marius and his posse of mages, who were mostly female, were in a heated debate with a very angry-looking Twanette, an agitated Axe hovering over her, crackling with electricity.
“Come on, honey, you know you were all over this!” Marius was saying quite loudly.
“Oh please, I have enough sense to know that small objects are a choking hazard.” Her blue eyes were slowly going white, only a circle of color remaining around her pupils. He narrowed his brown eyes at her and reached across towards her, as if to slap her.
Sleptaas’ curved throwing knife was suddenly lodged into the thick oaken table, Marius’ sleeve pinned along with it. As he hopelessly tried to pull out said blade, a particularly pissed-off Axe sent a massive bolt of lightning hurtling towards Marius. It struck the table and exploded, throwing anyone in a twenty-foot radius back towards the walls. Axe snarled loudly, the sound echoing loudly through the now silent dining-hall. He seemed to grow in size, taking up more and more space. Marius, now terrified out of his wits, panicked and tried to blend in with the ground as Axe drew close to him and snarled, his teeth only a few inches away.
“If you ever try to touch her again, I will tear you limb from limb and feed you to the mountain Ngorl,” Axe’s voice was soft and deadly; he meant every word he said.
The redhead mage nodded, unable to speak. Sleptaas got up from her cover and yanked the knife out of the table, thanking the gods that the blade was not harmed in the blast. She sheathed it quickly and went to help Twanette to her feet as the instructors rushed into the hall to make sure students were all right. Axe became his normal size and returned to his mistress’ shoulder.
“We should go, Twixy,” Sleptaas murmured to her companion, who nodded.
When they exited the building, they both burst out laughing.
“I didn’t know Axe could do that!” Twixy exclaimed.
“Well, you know,” Axe said softly, a hint of an egotistical purr in his voice. “I don’t feel obliged to give up all my secrets.” Twanette laughed.
“Well, I suppose I’ll see you tomorrow?” Sleptaas said.
“Yes,” Twixy smiled.
“Not at the same time as this morning, though,” the assassin’s storm-gray eyes narrowed teasingly, but her voice was serious.
The mage laughed. “Of course. I could meet you at the Blue Moon Inn at noon?”
Sleptaas considered. “How about we meet at the cave in the Royal Forest? We could kick some goblin ass, and the royal family would be pleased we cleared it.”
“Sure.”
“Well, see ya,” Sleptaas smiled, pulled up her hood, and headed into town.
