When we finally arrived at the dock, where we were required to be quiet in case someone caught us sneaking in, we got out of the little rowboat and thanked Tazuna’s friend.
“See you later,” the boatman said, rowing away as quietly as we’d come. The rest of us continued on through the forest, silent and cautious as we went. I could feel a sort of tension in the air, which unnerved me. Much to my despair, I once caught myself subconciously walking closer to Kakashi.
“There!” shouted Naruto, flinging a shuriken into a nearby bush. I sighed; he was completely determined to outdo Sasuke.
“Naruto!” Sakura yelled, hitting him over the head. “Look, you almost hit that poor rabbit!”
“I’m sorry, bunny!” Naruto cried, but something wasn’t right. That rabbit had been there for a reason… Naruto had been correct, for once.
“Snow rabbit,” Kakashi muttered, clearly coming to the same conclusion. “Duck!”
We all flattened ourselves to the ground, as a huge sword spun over our heads, lodging itself into the trunk of a nearby tree. A dark figure landed on the handle, balancing easily with his arms crossed as he gazed at us.
We stood, slowly. “Zabuza,” Kakashi breathed.
“The Demon of the Mist.” I nodded at him. “What are you doing here?”
“Look at who we’ve got here.” Zabuza snickered. “Kakashi of the Sharingan Eye, the man who’s copied over a thousand techniques.”
Sasuke tensed, his eyes going wide. I’d forgotten that none of them knew what you might call our “legacies.”
“And the little princess of the Goddess clan.” I wanted to wipe that stupid smirk off of the man’s face. “Not so little anymore, I see.”
“What the heck is he talking about?” Naruto asked dumbly.
Kakashi glanced at me. The thoughts running through my head were only getting faster and faster, as my mind adapted into battle mode. I nodded at him.
He righted his headband, showing his other eye, along with the old scar that ran down it. It was then that I realized that I’d never seen Obito’s transplanted eye after what had happened that day.
“Everyone, Manji formation,” I said. “Protect Tazuna at all costs, but don’t get involved until I tell you that you can. Understood?”
The Genin nodded mutely, surrounding Tazuna with kunais out and at the ready. The mist around us grew thicker, and I knew that it was Zabuza’s doing.
“He’ll come after me first,” Kakashi said quietly, and I could barely see him anymore. “Everybody, get ready!”
We all waited, alert, ready to defend at any given second. It wasn’t long before the three Genin began to shake, the tension and pressure of the mission getting to them.
“Sasuke, don’t worry,” Kakashi said, smiling. “I’ll never let my comrades die.”
My mind was running again. Balance of probability – who would he go after first? Originally, it might’ve been Kakashi, but after that vote of confidence, it would most definitely be Tazuna. With Tazuna out of the way, not only would he have accomplished his goal, but the mental blow would be distracting enough for him to at least defeat the three Genin.
