The dark haired girl had been reading calmly in her bed, wrapped up tightly in her blankets, trying too keep the cold stormy air as far away from her exposed skin as possible when her door burst open loudly"Hello my beloved sister sibling!" A boy with matching features cheers happily with a giant grin, waltzing into his sister's room as if it were his own.
"What do you want?" Said sister questions tiredly, looking up at the older boy hovering over her bed with an annoyed expresson.
It was obvious he wanted something with that 'innocent' grin.
"Oh not much, it's just mother dearest asked me to go out and get groceries..." He begins explaining, rocking back and forth on the heels of his feet.
Ace quickly caught on to what her brother wanted from her. He wanted her to take his chores.
"It's raining. No." She grunts, pulling her blankets further up her body, encasing her head and turning towards the wall, returning to her book.
"I'll give you twenty dollars~" he bribes knowing that his sister could never turn down money. Ace freezes at the offer, contemplating the bribe carefully.
"alright, on one condition." She flips the blankets off dramatically, narrowing her dark near black eyes at the matching pair staring her down. "I get to take one of your hoodies with me."
Chance never let anyone borrow his hoodies. His 'collection' as he called them. He sewed every stitch and designed them all after his favourite characters from his weird nerdy shows. Ace knew he would never agree to it.
It was a rare occurrence for Chance to let other people even touch his hoodies. So the fact that he uttered a small "okay." Was mind blowing to Ace
She stared at him in disbelief. He stared back uncomfortably. In that moment Ace knew something more was going on.
After an awkward stare down between the two she sighs, "I'll do it." She agrees quietly, a tinge of worry creeping into her chest. Something was going on with her brother, though she knew better than to ask.
Chance grins widely as he punches the air victoriously, "Hah! Sucker I only have ten dollars!" He exclaims racing out of my room without a second to spare.
By the sound of a distant slam Ace knew he had locked himself in his room.
"I can't believe he's older than me." Ace mumbles to herself, shaking her head at his behavior. "By three whole years too" she scoffs.
Throwing off her covers, Ace swings her legs over the edge of her small bed, planting her feet down on the soft carpeted floor. The cold air of winter causes goosebumps to rise along her legs.
She begrudgingly gets up, gathering some winter clothes to wear on the hopefully short trip.
When she was fully clothed in something other than pyjamas, she makes her way into the hallway of her ever cold house. Even wearing two layers of pants and her thickest long sleeve shirt, somehow she still felt the chill
Hanging on the door handle of the room across from hers is a black hoodie, with a large symbol on the back and a small symbol on the left breast of the hoodie. It was one of her brothers old ones, one that probably wouldn't fit his 6'ft figure any more.
Ace pulled the hoodie over her head easily, the size still a decent bit too large for her small frame, but that was how she liked her hoodies anyways
Making her way quietly through the house, she finds the envelope of money waiting for her on the small table by the door, sitting next to the tray where she would put her house key when she got in.
She shoves it in her pocket, not bothering to check inside, knowing that there would be a list and the correct amount of money to pay for all of the items within. Her mother was always a bit funny like that, always exact and measured.
She pulls on her boots, not caring if they didn't particularly go with the vibe of her sweatpants. Grabbing for the first umbrella she sees, she bravely opens the door, facing the stormy weather of the outside.
Closing the door behind her and locking it with her key, she starts walking to the grocery store down the street from her, rain pelting her mercilessly in the ten seconds she struggles with the latch on her umbrella.
Thunder roared in the distance as the wind whipped any loose clothes around. She was already soaked and it had only been half a minute.
With wind threatening to take her umbrella away, she held onto it with an iron grip, unable to hear the crackling of metal around her due to the ferocious storm.
A lightning strike could be seen crashing into the ground up ahead, the pavement it struck almost visible to Ace.
She shuddered in fear, freezing in shock. She had never seen lightning that close before. It looked a lot more red in colour than what she imagined.
"I am so beating up that useless brother of mine when I get home." Ace trembles, trying her best to shake off the shock.
Just then a loud crackling can be heard all around her, causing her to swivel her head in confusion.
She searched everywhere for the origin of the sound, eventually noticing the metal fence beside her vibrating against the wind.
She realised in horror exactly what this meant. She had read the signs multiple times in her life.
Metal would crackle or vibrate, hair would stand on end and- she took a deep breath in through her nose. Chlorine.
All of these signs she had ignored until now, when it was too late.
She was about to be struck by lightning.
A bright flash of red was the last thing she saw before a burning pain swept up the length of her arm, emanating from the umbrella handle grasped tightly in her hand.
The world around her seemed to fade to black as she fell backwards into the street, landing unconscious.
The red light still crackled along the newly formed burns down her arm, showing that it hadn't left just yet.
Nobody was around to see when the ground opened up below her, swallowing her whole whilst showing that same red crackling energy.
And with that, she was gone, the only trace of her being there, was the charred umbrella laying in the middle of the street, threatening to blow away.
