"Hello Shadow!" The child's voice was sweet and kind. His vision was at first blurry opening his eyes for the first time but soon everything came into focus. 'Shadow' his ears twitched to the very first sound he hears. His ruby eyes dart around quickly taking in the laboratory like surrounding. Finally he met the eyes of the voice's owner. A small blond haired a purple eyed girl in a blue dress smiling at him. And bald headed man with eyes hidden by shades dressing in a lab coat.
"Shadow." The man said sternly and nodded to the hedgehog, "Step out for me. Take your first steps."
The hedgehog did as so taking a careful step out of where he was. Getting used to his legs and made gripping motions with his hands he looked back at the man for further instruction.
"You are Shadow the Hedgehog. The Ultimate life form. Your were created to cure, assist, and stay with my grand-daughter, Maria."
'Maria' the name echoed in his ears to his mind as if it was a master password, to every lock on a computer.
"This is the one you were created for." he put Maria in the hedgehog's view. She smiled as they looked each other in the eyes.
He began to smile back and then held out his hand to the little girl. She ran into his arms and hugged him tightly. Surprised but not uncomfortable he hugged her back.
"Shadow, your my very best friend already." She said and giggled when a light purr had vibrated from his chest.
"I am your creator, Professor Gerald Robotnik. You may call me Professor." He smiled.
"Say hello Shadow." Maria prompted her new friend on good behavior. Shadow shown some emotion of being a little shy as he looked up at his creator and nodded while giving a small, "Hello."
Maria blushed, looking up at her grand father at the deep tone in this hedgehog's voice. Gerald smiled as he saw the girl already wrapping his white fur around her finger.
--8 days later.---
"Maria, Professor says you have to take a bath." Shadow says holding out his hand while she writes in a book.
"I will I will." She rolled her eyes.
"No, he means now." his voice growled deeply. She looked up with a frown, and obeyed. She knew he wasn't going to hurt her, but when he growled like that he sounded scary. She smiled as she passed him and taped his shoulder saying, "Catch me first~"
She took off down a corridor leaving the her friend stunned. Giving her a head start Shadow let her get a few floors a head of him. She waited around a corner catching her breath and looking out for him. Suddenly she felt a tap on her shoulder and a deep voice, "Got ya. Now go take a bath."
She squeaked and whirled around to be nose to nose with her hedgehog. She laughed and sighed, "Okay."
As she undressed on the other side Shadow sat on a seat waiting for her. The bath water started and he looked to the floor.
"So Shadow, how is your training?" Maria asked from over the water.
Shadow snapped out of his thought to answer, "Hu, oh. Fine. I've learned more hand to hand combat and different gun uses. I'm even on my way to a dr-driv-er...eh..." He scratched his head trying to think of the correct pronunciation.
"Driver's license?" Maria asked poking her head around the corner.
"Yeah! That's it." Shadow nodded happily.
"Wow! That's so cool Shadow!" She laughed.
"Yeah and Professor is still mad when I spell a word wrong. And I'm working on cursive writing."
"That's great. I bet you have pretty hand writing." She giggled.
"Well...it's readable." He said looking down with a blush of embarrassment.
Maria laughed again, "And your abilities?"
"Well... I'm awesome." He said in pride and looked down at the inhibitor rings the professor had put around his wrists and ankles.
"Well what can you do?"
"A black tornado." He said, "It's cool but I'll never do it on a full stomach."
"Your so funny." She squealed.
"And how have you been while I'm gone?" He asked.
"Fine, but lonely." She said.
"Aw, I'm sorry. I'm learning as fast as I can." He sighed.
"I know. It's okay." she stepped out of the tub and reached for a towel. Shadow handed her the towel.
"I'm nervous tomorrow." She said while getting dressed.
"Why is that?" He asked while getting out a hairbrush.
"Well, grandpa says I'm going to get my blood drawn." She said.
"Oh. Why?"
"Well, he..." She went silent. Shadow let an ear angle off to the side.
"I don't want to hurt you Shadow..." She turned to him with tears and buried her face in his white fur.
His ears went back and he hugged her purring to make her feel better, "You won't hurt me Maria."
"But, you can't be sure..." She sniffled hugging around his neck.
"Sure I can. Your not going to hurt me, not at all. And no matter what ends up happening, I'll always be your friend. I promise."
