When he spoke there was a slight Italian accent that suggested he spoke the language fluently. I, being the shy nervous person I was, scrambled for a pad and a pencil to write with. Once I found one I wrote a reply which he read out loud confused to why I was writing to him instead of talking. "It alright, no harm done and I'm Atlanta by the way" he read and handed the pad back. "That's a beautiful name, well I have to go. If I'm gone too long my roommates will have destroyed the place" and with that he left. Nico left butterflies in my stomach and I couldn't understand why.
I spent the next few hours unpacking all ours bags and putting everything in its proper place. Allen walked in with Jason following him right as I unpacked the last box. The tall blonde had his arm around my twins shoulder but withdrew it when he saw the annoyed look on my face. I stomped over and dragged Allen into the room while signing angrily. "Where were you?! I unpacked the entire room myself! I would have carried everything myself if Nico hadn't ran into me and helped!!" I signed while glaring at him. Allen cowered away from me and sat on his newly made bed. "I'm sorry Lanta, we lost track of time! I meant to help honestly, but Jason wouldn't let me go!" he exclaimed throwing all the blame on his poor boyfriend who was standing in the door way. My twin was trying to scoot back away from me so I moved forward and pushed him off the bed. He fell with a loud thud and a startled yelp. "I said I was sorry!!" he called getting up and rubbing his head. Jason was laughing behind me and walked over to my brother as I left the dorm room.
I walked through the center commons looking at the greenery while continuously brushing my hair from my face. It was a particularly windy day but that didn't meant it wasn't nice. Clouds blanketed the blue sky causing the sun to shine through in small patches. I sat on a particularly ornate bench and sigh contently. As I sat my mind wandered to the boy with sky blue eyes who had helped me earlier. When I thought about it he was tall and fit suggesting that he played sports. The more I thought about him the more I wanted to see him and talk to him. Surprisingly enough he was wandering the commons with a group of people, all guys, who were very fitting and muscular. I tried not to look but couldn't help myself. He was mesmerizing, the way his black hair shone in the sun light and his eyes sparkled when excited. He caught my gaze before I could look away and walked over. "Hey Atlanta, sorry for being so brief earlier but the two behind me can create enough destruction equivalent to a large tornado" he said softly with a casual smile. I smiled back and nodded in understanding. Nico looked at me confused. "Not trying to be rude, I'm just curious. But why aren't you talking? You didn't even introduce yourself out loud to me" he asked a look of clear confusion on his facial features. I looked away from the tall male and stared at the ground."Atlanta?" he questioned softly. I got up and grabbed his hand, indicating that I wanted him to follow me. The handsome male followed me with no question after telling his friends that he'd be back. We walked to the football field and sat in the gigantic metal stands. I looked around at the large open football field and took in the smell of the fresh cut grass. After a little I turned to him and decided to try signing to the young male. "Can you sign?" I said using the hand signs that helped me communicate to others. Nico looked at me confused obviously not understanding sign language so instead I pulled out my small note pad and started to write. Just like before, once I handed it to him he read it out loud. "I didn't introduce myself out loud because I can't talk. When I was little there was an accident that caused me to not be able to speak. I've been taking speak therapy classes since I was small but nothing has worked to get me talking, although I can make small sounds." He read then looked at me in shock. We sat there for awhile as he studied me. I could tell by looking into his vibrant blue eyes that he was just curious, not judgmental or in any a negative way. It took awhile for him to finally speak. "I'm sorry, I didn't know and I probably embarrassed you in front of my friends." He apologized sincerely. Now it was my turn to look at him with confusion, tilting my head slightly. Nico smiled and laughed softly but definitely not in a rude way. "Sorry, don't take what I said the wrong way. I'm perfectly fine with you being mute" he said softly smiling a calm and collected smile. That smile made my heart beat faster and a soft blush rose to grace my cheeks. I nodded with a smile and was about to get up when he spoke again. "You were using sign language right?' he question curiously as he got up. I looked up at him and nodded, wondering why he asked. Nico smiled and extended his hand to help me up. "Well then I'm going to learn sign language" he stated confidently as I took his hand and he helped me up. I stared at him with a mixture of shock and confusion. No one had ever offered to learn sign language for me before. Before I knew it I was hugging Nico gratefully. You could tell he was shocked but hugged me back after a little. I loved the smell that was coming off him. It was a very clean smell unlike most boys who liked to wear a lot of cologne. Once I pulled back I grabbed the pad and wrote again. "Thank you no one has ever offered to learn to sign for me before." I wrote and handed him the note. Nico read it and looked up at me with a kind smile. "Well I would love to learn sign language for you" he stated and took my hand. "Let me escort you back to your room?" he asked softly with a hint of nervousness in his voice. I nodded and we proceed to walk to my dorm room. It was as if no one else even mattered as we walked. Nico would ask me yes or no questions so I could either nod or shake my head then he would answer his own question himself. We ended up walking past the dorm and having our type of conversation for a couple hours. He finally walked me back to my room when it was late and the sun was setting. "I had a great time" he said softly as we walked up to the door. I nodded in agreement, giving him a smile. "I'll see you around, um hey I play football and I was wondering if you would come to my games?" he asked obviously a little nervous that I would turn him down. I grabbed the note pad and wrote yet again."I wouldn't miss it but you might just see me on the sideline after all I am going to be on the dance team" I wrote with a bright smile and handed the note to him. Once he read it a big smile graced his face, lighting up his features. "That's great! I guess I'll see you there, goodnight Atlanta" he said softly before leaving. I watching him leave before going into my room. Allen was lying on his bed and laughed when he was the look on my face. "Spill" he commanded smiling. We sat up all night as I told him about Nico and how amazing he was. I told my twin how he was going to learn how to sign for me and asked Allen if he would help me try to be able to talk. I desperately wanted to speak to Nico and wanted to make an effort for him since he was making one for me. Around midnight we finally went to bed.
