Cher’s P.O.V.
A few more days passed and Sam, Justin and I were finally back in Stratford.
It was the day before Isabella’s funeral and tonight was my first night back in Stratford.
Pattie, being the wonderful person she is, had organised a ‘welcome home’ party for me and my father, and she said Sam is more than welcome there too if he wanted to come.
Pattie had told me she was willing to forget everything Sam had done to both me and Justin in the past as long as he kept me happy. I do love her so much. She’s been like my mom to me ever since my real mom died and I don’t know how I’ll ever repay her.
My dad and Claire were already at Pattie’s house, where Justin and all of Pattie’s guests should already be at.
I was in the car with Sam and the kids. It took a lot of persuading to get Sam to come along, but he soon agreed to come to the party. He seemed a little bit on edge; as though he really had something he wanted to talk to me about but I just ignored it. I just put it down to nervousness.
Esme was telling Austen and Amberlee a story she had learnt at preschool, which gave Sam time to talk to me about whatever it was that was bothering him.
“Am I making you unhappy?” Sam asked me quietly, avoiding looking at me.
“Of course you’re not.” I said, holding his hand and kissing it gently - yet still making sure to keep one hand on the steering wheel and making sure not to take my eyes off the road.
Sam pulled his hand away harshly.
“Then why did you kiss Justin last week?” Sam asked me through gritted teeth.
“You know about that?”
“I saw everything.”
“Oh, Sam, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean for it to happen but…”
“No ‘buts’, Cher. This sort of thing doesn’t just happen. You betrayed me.”
“I really am sorry. I promise, it won’t happen again.”
“It’d best not. Because you know this is your second chance, you’ve cheated on me before. I don’t want to lose you again.”
“And you won’t lose me. Because I love you and you know that.”
“Sometimes I don’t know that.”
I pulled up in front of Pattie’s house, got the children out of the car - slamming the doors as I went. Sam got out of the car too and came over to me, picking up Austen as I picked up Amberlee while Esme ran ahead of us. He put his free arm around me, supposedly to make us seem like the happy couple. But, to be honest, at this moment I wasn’t very happy at all.
