Our End

I charge the demon. I manage to pierce its heart, but it's only a lower level one anyway. Panting, I place my back on Suguru's. We're surround, but we're watching each other's backs. I feel him lean on me as well. At this point, we're the only things keeping each other up. My hair is stuck to my face and neck with sweat. My hands are sliding on the grip of my Weapon. Suguru lays his head on mine.

"Where's...reinforcements?"

"I don't...know...they should've...already...been here," I wheeze.

"We...won't...be able...to hold out...much longer..."

"I know..." One of the demons lunges at me. I raise my sword, but I don't have much strength left. Suddenly, a whoop rings through the air. I nearly sigh as I see Genjiro fly over my head and kill the demon. I turn my head to see Emiko and Yoji fighting the other demons off.

"Took you...long enough..." I say.

"You know us. We had to make a dramatic entrance. Besides, it's about time I get to save your ass," Genjiro comments.

"You're...ridiculous..."

He smirks. "Yup. And I'm damn proud."

"That's obvious," I murmur as he leaps away. I face Suguru.

He smiles weakly at me. "I need a really long nap. I could sleep for days."

"We have that vacation coming up," I remind him.

"Yeah, and I know just where we're going. My family owns a place in the mountains. What do you say?"

"Just the two of us?" He nods. "Hell yeah."

He beams. "It's settled.

"Gag," Genjiro states. I glare at him. "Sorry. Could you hold all the lovey-dovey crap until you're alone. I think I threw up in my mouth a little."

"Says the one who's the biggest romantic ever," Emiko adds, bumping his shoulder. He blushes.

"Aw, look at that!" I chuckle, poking his cheek. "The big bad wolf is blushing. How cute."

He slaps my hand away. "I'm not blushing." Emiko kisses his cheek. His face gets even redder. We all bust up and, after a few seconds, Genjiro joins us. Yoji walks up to us, chuckling, before he trips and falls.

I laugh. "Yoji, you really are the clumsiest person I've ever known."

"I can't help it."

"I know." I hold out a hand and he takes it. I help him to his feet. He casually brushes off his chest and I snicker.

He points a finger. "Watch it, Akihito."

"Sorry, old man."

"What. Did you call me?" I hold a hand over my mouth. "I am not old, you little brat." He chases me and I take off, laughing. "I'm simply more experienced!" Finally, not able to take it anymore, I fall to the ground and wheeze in deep breaths through my laughter. Yoji drops down beside me.

"So, Yoji, our vacation time is coming up."

"I'm aware."

"Suguru and I decided to go to his parents cabin in the mountain."

"That sounds nice. I hope you have fun." He shifts slightly, looking down at me. "I'm glad he makes you happy. After everything that's happened, you deserve it more than anyone."

I smile. "Thanks, Yoji. It means a lot that you accept us. Considering you're my father, after all."

He chokes slightly. "It's still a shock to hear you say that. I'm so glad that you think of me like that. I don't want to replace your real father, but I'm happy that I could make you feel at home." He looks at the sky. "You always have a home with me, you know that right?"

"Of course I do. But, the bird has to fly away from the nest sometime, right?"

"I guess you're right. I can't hold on to you forever. Please be careful. You've been through more than you should've at your age."

"I know, Yoji. We'll be smart." Suddenly, a weight drops onto my, stealing my breath. I look to find Suguru smiling at me. "Damn it, Su. Warn me next time."

"Sorry." I wrap my arms around him and breathe in his scent. I'll never get tired of holding him. I felt so empty for so long. For years I believed I'd never have someone like this. I thought I'd always be alone, that I deserved to be. I'd told Suguru everything that'd happened at Nishimura Academy and, despite it all, he still loved me. It's unreal. His steady breathing matches mine until we're in sync. The ring on my third finger on my right hand catches the light. I still remember that day. I'd gotten us promise rings so we'd always be together. Anytime he's not near and I feel anxious, I touch this ring and I can feel him with me.

Someday, when we're a little older and our lives are more stable, we'll get married. I hope to see the world free of demons before then. That way, we'll have even more to celebrate. Yoji would be there. As well as Emiko, Suguru's sister Saeko, and even Genjiro. To this day, I'm still surprised I consider him to be a part of our small group of friends. I was actually kind of happy when he and Emiko started dating. We've been through a lot and nearly died more time than I care to count, but we're still here. And we always will be. I close my eyes and breathe deep. I'm just a shadow of Akihito now, but that's perfectly alright. They still accept me for exactly who I am. This is the beginning of the end of our story. So much has happened, but I'm grateful for every minute I've been alive. Everything happened for a reason and I'm finally happy.
