CHAPTER 10

Professor Reinhart Schmuck --- a professor in Psychology in Colorado State University. He got his doctor's degree in Harvard Medical School. He's Kat's father. Kat never mentioned to me anything about his father until I learned, five years ago about my condition. Since then, Kat always brings me to his father to have me checked and conditioned so that I won't do anything wrong. That kept me in check for the last five years. But we never told him about the killings, just my condition to help me out. Mrs. Melinda Schmuck, Kat's mom was seperated with Professor Reinhart since Kat is four. I don't really know much of the detail.

Atty. Richardson: So, Professor, tell what you know about the case and why you are testifying with the person who was accused of killing your own daughter.

Dr. Schmuck: I know all of you might wonder why I'm testifying against my own daughter.

Mrs. Schmuck: You son of a bitch! (She shouted as she bursted with hate as she saw her ex-husband.) After leaving us, you now have the guts to protect your daughter's murderer? How dare you?!

Judge Gammel: Order in the court! Dr. Schmuck, please continue.

Dr. Schmuck: I'm so sorry if you're taking these all wrong. I've known Bell for a long time. He and Kat were always going out of town, just to see me, ask some counsel. He brought me closer to my daughter that's why I know he didn't kill Kat!

*The crowd was covered in confusion. Mrs. Schmuck looked at his ex-husband furiously and full of hate.*

Atty. Richardson: So your saying, just because he brought you closer to your daughter, without telling of course, my client, doesn't mean he didn't kill her. So what makes you say that or your proof that Mr. Johnson, has nothing to do with your child's murder.

Dr. Schmuck: I can't see any reasons for him to do that. Besides, he and Kat are helping me out with something.

Atty. Richardson: And what is that?

Dr. Schmuck: (He paused and doubted for a moment.) I don't know if I should be saying these, but, I .... I was having a relationship with one of my students.

*The crowd gasp. The court was filled with echoes and noises.*

Judge Gammel: Order! Order in the court. Please continue Dr. Schmuck.

Dr. Schmuck: That student, I'll just keep her identity a secret, told me that she was pregnant. I was afraid she's gonna blackmail me, so I asked her to come and see. At the same time, I asked my daughter that day, if she can grab me a pregnancy kit. She hesitated at first, but I asked her a huge favor, and told her to bring Bell, if she's uncomfortable with it.

*Questioning continued...*

Atty. Lance: So, what happened the night of disappearance of your daughter, can you tell me what is your connection with all the happenings?

Dr. Schmuck: The day of my daughter's disappearance, uhhmm.. yes. I called Bell that night because Kat was not answering her phone. That's why I know, that Bell, was having dinner with his friends. I asked him to come and pick up Kat on their house cause my student is on her way to my apartment.

Atty. Lance: So why ask Bell and Kat to buy the kit? Why not buy it for yourself? Or ask your student to bring you the result?

Dr. Schmuck: I want to see the girl take the test so that she wouldn't do anything rash or blackmail me with any fake results. At the same time, I'm trying to keep me and my student out of anyone's sights. So I asked them.

Atty. Lance: So what happened to the result?

Dr. Schmuck: Let me cut to the chase. The test was negative, and she admitted that she just want to use the test to blackmail me. I was right. It was because I was breaking up with her because we can't keep the act much longer and more, it would ruin my career. She was furious, and then walked out. Kat and Bell, told me that they will go try to talk to her, but they never returned.

Atty. Lance: So you're telling us that the night of the disappearance, Mr. Johnson and Ms. Schmuck are with your student.

*I heard Mrs. Schmuck saying to their lawyer something like, "Now our daughter's dead because she was caught up in his mischiefs, and he prioritize his career more than our daughter's safety? Son of a bitch.." Something like that.*

Dr. Schmuck: I know that Bell didn't kill Kat! Bell cares too much for Kat and so was Kat to him. Maybe, the one who killed Kat was my student, to get her revenge on me.

Atty. Lance: Then why Bell don't remember anything about that night? Or why not tell us the name of your student, a possible suspect?

Dr. Schmuck: My student never came back to my class. I don't want to ruin my career. If the university finds out that I was having an affair with one of my student, I will be fired! Licenses revoked! Can you imagine that?!

Atty. Lance: More important that finding your daughter's killer? Putting an innocent kid in jail?

Dr. Schmuck: (tears began to fall) I don't know what to say. I want to keep the information secret, but I will tell you, not here. I will give my personal statement in private and with a lawyer. And with Bell, (he looked at me) I'm sorry but everyone has to know. He has this condition, that everytime, he feels extreme pain, anger, or sadness, he will forget the exact thing that will happen next for hours. That's why he always says, he doesn't know or something. I will give you my study about Bell for the last five years.

My mom, Chad and Shelly, was waiting for me at the hallway.

"I know, you would never do that." My mom said.

"Good thing, we had Professor Schmuck's testimony. I'm really sorry Bell, I was busy looking for him. Thanks to Chad and Shelly, for telling me that you and Kat were going out to see him." Atty. Lance explained.

"Why didn't you tell us before about your condition?" Chad asked.

"Yeah, but your the real deal bro. Forgetting everything, but still getting high marks on math?" Shelly added.

"Come on guys, I'm sorry. I didn't think it was that important. Besides, I only lose my memory if something extreme came up. And stop acting like I've won. It's no time to celebrate." I was about to thank Dr. Schmuck for helping me out but I saw him running towards Mrs. Schmuck. Looks like they're arguing or something. Maybe next time, I'll talk to them.

I bid my temporary farewell to the guys and mom. The officers took me back to the cell. The next trial will be scheduled a week after these even though I'm going back to the hell where I shouldn't belong, I felt relieved, knowing that my mom, my friends, are there to always help me out. But there's one thing in my mind. I need to escape. But everyone's eyes are on me, and especially that Detective Rosberg. He won't stop until he proves that I'm not innocent. But I can't let the Kat's killer on the loose. I need to think of something, I need to make my own move.

Then later that night, I was alone in my cell. The court has confirmed my condition, thanks to Dr. Schmuck's data. So for safety purposes, the court decided not to put anyone in a cell together with me. I was about to sleep until I heard someone calling me.

"Bell, hey Bell, wake up." It was Detective Murdock.

"How did you get in here?" I asked him.

"It's not important. But for now, let me tell you. You're not winning this case. Rosberg is playing this game. It may sound strange from an FBI Agent, but I'll help you escape. Kat is waiting for you, and she needs to talk to you."

(What?! Kat is alive?! Hahahah! The end to the story is approaching! Let's wait for Chapter 11)
