You Ready?
The pilot questioned through the intercom. It crackled over the loud, gushing air that blasted at our faces through the small side windows from the spinning chopper blades. I had always loved the thrill....the excitement of the missions. Today, however, was very important. My heart clenched, my blood boiled just thinking about how close we were to ending this war...in only a year.
I shifted, nodding my head to the small camera in the corner of the large room. The cargo chopper was enormous, and rightfully so. It was meant to carry anything from weapons to literally tons of food....that is, until the Western unit hijacked it before it reached the skies. Now, my pride would have been much more....potent, had it been mine, the Southern unit.
The chopper jolted suddenly to the side, causing all five of us inside it's chambers to grab something near to catch ourselves.
It wasn't until the machine was in the air, that I had let go of Clarke's arm. My hand had grown sweaty, as did my lower back under all my protective gear. Not only did I wear a vest that stopped the electric current of their newest weaponry, but I had the most intense armor that I had seen in anyone.
Now, I realized that no one had special... skills... like I did, at least not at the camp. It was just me, and it had been the loneliest feeling in the world. No one knew. They couldn't, not if I wanted to avoid those camps. Prisons, really, for the gifted. that is for the exception of Clarke and the camp surgeon. Now, just Clarke, due to the unfortunate fact that the doctor had passed away shortly after performing surgery on my skull.
He had planted a thin, metal barrier on the inside of my skull. It would protect me from anyone with skills like mine from reaching into the depths of my mind and taking secrets that would ultimately destroy our resistance.
Not only did it protect my thoughts, but my body as well. I am forever immune to a Flinching. The doctor, whom I never found out his name, made sure the material he put in my head could withstand the shock of a bullet....or several. For that fact I was grateful. Not that it wouldn't hurt like Perdition if anyone ever managed to shoot me.
The chopper ride would be around four hours, so we all had time to kill. My gaze trained on each soldier. Each on a trusted warrior and friend that was in my small squad. We were a wicked group, I couldn't deny that. Even our name was awesome, given we had several different names before we decided on one...courtesy of Louie.
The dork had wanted to call us The Killer Socks. We all denied knowing him after that comment, except for Edith. She'd given him a joking peck on the cheek that actually came closer to stopping his heart than the shock from enemy weapons he barely survived several months ago.
My head lolled to the side, coming to rest on Clarke's shoulder. I felt his fingers tangle themselves in my hair. The combined whirring of the chopper and gentle stroking of Clarke's hands left me zoning in content. It was not long before my vision blurred, and my eyes slid shut.
