Chapter 3

Psalm 32:7 You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.

Monday morning, as the first day of school started, I used a lot of make-up to cover up my bruises, you could barely tell the incident had happened. Everyone was a buzz about John and how he was beat up in the parking lot of the bowling alley by some guy. No one knew that he had attacked me and no one knew it was Jake who had saved me. As I walked to homeroom, everyone down the hall kept talking about how John's face was messed up and leg broken. It seemed like the more times I heard the story, the more he was beat up. I didn't know what to believe. I had tried not to think about John since I talked to the police Saturday morning, although it was hard to sleep and I kept reliving every detail in my dreams. But until this moment, I had not thought about him getting beat up. I had shut those things away, not wanting to know any of the details. I tried my best to block out what people were saying and stay to myself. I didn't want anyone else knowing my secret pain. I was humiliated enough that the few guys on the football team and Jake knew.

I was happy when I got to homeroom and I got my schedule finding out I had three classes with Hope starting with English. Fourth period Algebra and sixth period Science.

"Hope, what happened the other night. What did the guys do to John? I really don't want to know, but the rumors I am hearing just keep getting worse." I had to know the truth and not whispers of the truth exaggerated.

"Grace, they were defending you! Your honor." She said, kind of shocked.

"Yeah, I know...but did they have to go that far? I really wish they had not done that! Let the cops take care of everything."

"He hurt you...but you don't want him hurt?" She was confused.

"I don't know why he did what he did. I don't think he was thinking right. The anger was like a switch that got turned on all of a sudden. I don't know what happened. I wasn't expecting it. They said he is still in the hospital." I said shaking my head as tears welled up in my eyes. "They said his leg is broken, someone else said his arm was dislocated, and someone else said he was in a coma. What is really happening?"

"NO! He is not in the hospital...he is in jail." She corrected me.

"What? When?"

"Yeah, you filled out the police report and I guess they searched his truck and found some of your blood in there and some of your skin samples under his nails. He is in jail. His dad refused to bail him out. The guys beat him up, but they did not break any bones, just took a couple of good punches. He may have a black eye and bruised ribs, but nothing drastic!" She told me as I sat there just staring past her trying to calm down before anyone saw me crying. The other thing that kept me from crying was the realization that my bruises were hidden by my make-up and if I cried someone might see the bruises and ask questions.

Mr. Cornwell started English then and I could not find out more.

As we were leaving class, she asked me where I was heading? "Home Economics" I said. I was a pretty decent cook and enjoyed it. She told me she would see me in Algebra and I waved to her as we were heading off in different directions.
