Laken's *POV*
School went by pretty quickly. It was almost like a repeat of yesterday. I made small talk with everyone and snack and lunch. I also exchanged a few glances with Aaron during it.
The school day was now coming to and an end and everyone was in the hallway gathering their things from their lockers. Ashton was talking to Lena. They seemed to be hitting it off pretty well. I couldn't help but feel a little jealous.
Aaron's game was today and I couldn't help but feel excited to watch. He's got to be a great player, he literally had the muscle tone of a 30 year old body builder. A boy with arms like his could shoot a basketball anywhere.
I was suddenly snapped out of thought about the game when I felt a tap on my shoulder. "Laken." His angel like voice filled my ears. I smiled, before turning around.
"Yes, Ashton?" I asked. He was fiddling with his thumbs.
He looked around and then looked at me. "Are you ready to go?" He gave me a soft smile. I felt my heart drop. I told him yesterday I'd be his ride home everyday and today I couldn't because I told Aaron I'd go to his game.
I couldn't do this to Ashton. It won't hurt to take Ashton home and then come back to school to watch Aaron's game would it?
"Yes, of course. Let's go." I smiled at him. He returned a smile back.
We walked together to my car and hopped it. I cranked the car and we buckled our seatbelts.
"What genre today?" I asked, lifting my right brow up.
He started to think for second. "How about country." He said.
I rolled my eyes at his choice. He couldn't have picked something better? I started to change the radio to a country station. This music made me want to drive off the road.
"Not liking the music, huh?" Ashton asked me with a smile.
"Ehh, it's okay." I lied. This music was far from okay.
"Oh come on." He complained jokingly. "You're telling me you don't like some Jason Aldean or Blake Shelton?" He questioned with a smirk. I gave him a playful glare and he looked at me and started to open his mouth.
"Oh please don't." I groaned as he started to sing the country songs. He tried to make his voice sound as southern as possible, but he failed. Miserably.
He started to shake his shoulder to the beat of the song as he sang it. I started to burst out laughing. He laughed as he sang song. I started to rock my head side to side as he moved his shoulders. I couldn't help, but join in to the song. Soon before I knew it I was singing the song. My stomach was hurting from laughter. We sang at the top of our lungs.
As I kept my eyes on the road while singing, I could feel his eyes on me. I could feel my cheeks starting to burn red, but I was hoping my loud voice was distracting him. It didn't.
"Are you hot, love?" He asked. My heart skipped when I heard him say "love". I didn't know why I felt this way when he said it. I didn't feel actual feelings for Ashton. Just a small crush.
I could feel my cheeks getting more red. "Yeah, I think so." I started to reach for the knob to make it cooler in her, but my hand met Ashton's instead.
The country music was playing in the background. I held my breath as I looked at our hands and then I looked at him. He too, was looking at our hands, but he snapped his head to the road.
"Laken, Watch out!" He yelled.
I looked up and yanked the steering wheel. Fuck. I almost hit a mailbox.
"S-so-sorry." I stuttered, keeping my eyes glued to the road. I felt my heart berating out of my chest. I should've been more careful especially with a passenger in my car. "That was stupid of me. I should've been more careful." I apologized sincerely.
"Don't worry about it." He said, I could see a smile on his face out of the corner of my eye. He then looked down and played his hands.
The rest of the car ride was awkward and soon we were at his house.
"Thank you." He said, almost whispering. I watched him walk to his front door with his head down. I started to drive off slowly but still keeping my eyes on Ashton. Soon I saw the door open and a hand snatch him in. I gasped at the surprise. I started to look for the nearest place to park that no one could see me at. Finally I found a place on the side of the road that had a lot of bushes I could park my car behind to hide it a little. I unbuckled my seatbelt and sat in my car taking a few breaths.
Something is wrong.
I could feel it in my gut. No one snatches their child inside like that. My mind began to wonder and it led me back to the night Ashton tried to jump off that bridge. There had to be reason why and I've never notice anyone pick on him at school. I mean, he use to be alone at school, but no one ever bullied him. He wanted to jump off that bridge for a reason, and I beleive it had something to do with his Home life.
I jumped out of my car and locked the doors. I began to run withy back crouched so it wouldn't be hard to see me from looking out a window. I finally got close enough to the house. My back was resting on the house. I breathed and started to look around for window. I finally spotted one and ran to it. I crouched below the window and took a big breath. Right before I looked through the window, I heard lots of shouting. I could hear Ashton shouting along with a mixture of two voices. One had a female tone to it and another was a male tone. It must've been his mom and dad. Suddenly I heard a huge slam. My face went white as I realized the sound was from the front door slamming. I started to tip toe behind the house, but stepped on a stick. I cringed at the sound of the loud snap.
"Hello?" The familiar voice called out. It was Ashton.
I closed my eyes as I started to hear his footsteps getting close to me. Please let this be a dream.
"Laken, what the hell are you doing here?" I kept his voice low, but I could feel his anger.
"I'm sorry. I-I just got worried about you. I saw someone grab you-". I stammered, but was interrupted.
"Please get out of here." He pleaded, looking at the ground."
"Fine, but only if you answer my question." I said with confidence.
Ashton looked at me and we locked eyes.
"That night that you tried to kill your self." I started to choke on my words. The thought of it still pained me. His mouth was dropped open and he looked a little upset and what I was bringing up. "Why'd you attempt to do it?" I said, taking a deep breath.
Ashton swallowed hard. "Please, Laken, get out of here now. I'll tell you when I'm ready. Just not now." He said. I could tell he really wanted me to leave.
I looked down at the ground and decided to respect his descision. I didn't want to upset him more. Without speaking another word, I walked away from him until I got to my car.
I got in the car feeling upset. I wanted Ashton to be alright and I shouldn't have brought up the incident. I put my head down on the steering wheel and closed my eyes. I tried to calm myself until I remembered something.
Shit. The basketball game. I looked at my phone only to realize that the game was over by now. The game wouldn't last 2 hours. I'll just tell Aaron I got too busy or had something to do. I cranked the car and felt annoyed at myself.
Today was complete shit. I can't wait for The weekend. I can't wait for Friday.
