Her eyelids fluttered as the gunshots rang in her ears. The two shots made her stomach flip and her mind fuzz until her senses were completely gone.
Revenge was the only thing left on her mind.
A few months ago.

Mika glanced at the clock.
.
.
Tick.
Her eyes glazed over the smooth, reflecting surface of the glass plate, the hands behind ticking with smooth haste. The hands began to swirl around the wide face as the long needle hit the twelve-o-one in roman numerals.
Jay sauntered in.
"You're late," Mika said. She turned to get a better look at him. She studied his countenance. His deep blue eyes somehow glistened in the darkness. The sharp jaw caught what little light came from the lantern in his hand, and his lashes fell, elongated in the shadows reaching up. She took it all in with a deep breath.
"I know." He scratched the back of his neck at the awkward silence, and Jay wondered if she was really somehow connected to him and his group of black-haired and blue-eyed prodigies.
"You shouldn't be late."
Her gaze cooled but her voice was rough as the stubble around his defined features.
"Hey, I know you're new, but you can't get angry at such little things if you're going to work with us. I'll have you know -"
"- I'll have you know" The girl mocked him with a disgusted expression resting on her face.
The twisted expression vanished and she stared at the wall, avoiding eye contact.
"Ugh. We are not going to get along, are we?"
In response, she twisted her lips in revulsion and glared.
The stare of those glossy blue eyes are going to be the death of me, Jay thought, shivers tracing his spine and toying with his heartbeat. Stop it.
"So, what are we supposed to be doing?"
Jay jolted slightly at the sound of her voice, but he hid it by smoothly crossing the room, down the hall to a shaded door.
Her eyes followed his long fingers, curling around the knob with a swift force as he rotated his hand to present the room to Mika.
The door crawled open on its hinges.
The floor and crevices in the wall were lined with dust, but the ceiling reached far above her in an attempt to make her feel small.
Jay pushed her inside and let the door creak and slow behind them.
"Now, let's see what you can do."
He sat into a bent-over position, his arms ready for a punch.
So she whipped her leg around and pulled his ankle forward. Jay fell to the floor in a solid motion.
"That's for calling me a kid," she said sassily.
He groaned and closed his eyes.
Feeling a tinge of guilt at the sight of his lame expression, Mika bent over, beginning to gently twist his ankle in different directions.
"I think you're okay. It wasn't that hard."
"Yep, we'll get along great," Jay muttered.
Standing, Mika lent her hand to Jay.
"Okay, then... " He groaned a bit more and tugged on her, wrists intertwined, his weight resting on his left leg. They pulled together.
Realizing that she could feel Jay's breath on her forehead, she looked away and let go of Jay's wrist, but his hand stayed on hers.
"What are you -"
Jay tightened his grip, and Mika stared - open mouthed - at his fingers, now turning white with force.
Before the intimate moment could last a breath longer, Jay pulled her wrist close to his chest and pushed Mika, pulling her ankles from beneath her. landing her hard on the ground with her legs right under his.
Without a second thought, she used the momentum of his push to pull Jay down with her. His grip released and she rolled to a stand, hands on her hips.
"I guess we now have our fighter," Jay mumbled.
"Don't try me, kid."
Her senses tingled.
A figure traced the shadows of the doorway and made an appearance in the room. Another determined dark-haired girl slipped into conversation, oblivious to Jay's whining.
"So, new girl, things run differently here from what you're used to."
"Okay... Meaning?" Mika said.
"Meaning, that you will have to listen and at least try to cooperate with the team." The dark-haired girl matched Mika's glare. Her eyes shifted to Jay on the ground.
Red flooded Mika's cheeks.
She scoffed. "My name is Katherine, but my alias is Kyla. The rest of them, you only need to know their aliases - Talon, Essie, and Lio. Oh, and -" she pointed to Jay - "you seemed to have met him."
"Alright. What's mine then?" Mika curiously questioned, excitement growing behind her young eyes.
"Yours?"
"Yeah, what should I answer to? Not that I answer to anyone, but I -" Mika began, only to be interrupted by Kyla.
"From now on, your name isn't Mika... " Her eyes shifted, searching. "You're Em."
