On the trip up she would slip a little and almost fall over with the loss of her balance, her backpack wasn't doing much to help either. She shoved her hands in her jacket pockets hoping to regain feeling on this nice 13 degrees Fahrenheit day. She mumbled unintelligent things under her breath as she fumbled with the keys to unlock her front door. She swung the door open and went to her knees when she saw her little Caucasian Shepard puppy. The puppy was covered in black, gray, and white fur and his face was almost hidden beneath it all. His curly tail tried to wag but it just flopped around. "Doc! Awww look at my little boy! How are you so freaking cute? Actually, better question, how were you roaming around the house? You better not have peed or pooped on anything, dad is gonna kill me if you did!" She finished sternly and tried to shake her finger at him, but Doc just lolled his tongue out at her. She stuffed a giggle and her face lit up in a grin. (Surprise she actually smiles!)
"Nah, it was just me," a jet black haired boy with a hawk like nose, said with a handful of chips shoved in his mouth so it sounded more like, "Mwah, ih wah jus mah." The girl giggled and scooped up the puppy in her arms.
"Sorry, Jake. Could you repeat that?" She tilted her head and smiled sweetly. Doc started to lick her face, making her glasses fall to the top of her nose so she had to lean her head back all the way to see. She tried to keep the sickly sweet smile on her face but it turned quickly into a big grin as she realized what she probably looked like.
Jake laughed and tried again, saying," I let Doc out for you because I got here before you and he kept whining. So I let him out and he peed in your front yard. Speaking of which, most of the time you are here before me... what took so long?"
"Oh the bus driver freaked out because I made a bad joke at her expense," she said with a shrug and slid the puppy off her lap. She grabbed a handful of chips from the bagJake had in his hand and shoved it in her face.
"Calm down, May! Don't suffocate on me here," Jake said with a laugh as she tilted her head at him and grabbed another handful and repeating the process. Jake was May's best friend and even though they only lived a few blocks away from each other, they lived in different school district which meant May and Jake got to gossip about their schools twice the amount.
"So did Harold say when he was coming home?" Jake asked her as he stroked her puppy on their couch, watching the Bachelor.
"No, my dad... well he's probably coming home late. Meaning he's probably going to the bar tonight which also means he's gonna be drunk tonight," May said with a sigh. Jake just nodded his head understanding. Ever since May's mother had left them he never came home Friday nights sober.
"Daddy? Are we talking about Daddy?"
"What? I thought we were talking about Mommy... you know the one that proved our useless and worthlessness."
"Oh shut up already, Jakey is here!!! He's my favorite because I think he's a faker!" Whispering hisses filled May's mind and she placed a scowl on her face. They sometimes just popped up randomly and made the stupidest remarks. Other times though, it wasn't so random, and even if Jake said it was stupid lies, May couldn't help but believe them. It happened most of the time at night, either before falling asleep, or all night long which concluded in sleepless nights.
"You okay? You can come over to my house tonight if you want. My parents are home, but we could also stay here if you like..." Jake suggested, noticing her scowl and concluding it was because of her father, Harold.
"Yeah, but could we stay here." Jake nodded and he turned his head back to watching the most dramatic, yet idiotic, show ever. It wasn't uncommon for the 15 year olds to have sleep overs, they were only 15... they were still pretty innocent compared to most of the Freshmen they knew. Plus they were best friends since the age of 3, they were like siblings.
