May woke with a start. She sat up in her bed and her blankets fell off her shoulders onto her lap. Her ears tingled at the sudden sound of a car and a garage door opening and closing. She held her breath and let her eyes fall on a sleeping Jake. He had insisted that sleeping only with a sleeping bag and a throw pillow would be comfortable for him. Truth is though, that May had heard Jake tossing and turning all night. Now she only frowned to see him deep in sleep, she still wasn't convinced he was actually sleeping. May snapped her head towards her door when she heard a slam from the kitchen/garage door. She later back down and pulled her blankets over her face trying to drown out the noise... there was so much noise.
"Daddy's back!"
"Yesssss, we hate him! He gives us what we deserve, we are worthless."
"No I'm not!" May thought back, interrupting the voices. She winced at a sudden headache that exploded in her head. Her head was full of yelling voices.
"Did she just snark back to us?!"
"Oh hell no."
"Be damned you brat."
"It's like she's trying, stupid girl."
"What a child!"
"I swear she needs to learn something, something I'm willing to teach."
They carried on, light hearted at first, like they were joking. As time continued on they're words grew louder and they stung more every time. They rung in her ears and crossed her mind a million times before Jake woke her up by shaking her back and forth.
"May... May! May, wake up!" Jake called out to her and May grabbed on to his voice like a life boat to keep herself from drowning. "Um... it's ten and... well, I'm hungry." May gave him a look that filled with her gratitude towards him, but he was looking at the ground.
"It's fine, Jakob. We have cereal in the pantry, and if it's only ten my dad's not up yet to yell at us," May said reassuringly, using Jake's full name, which got his attention.
"Cereal? Yeah I'm down with that!" He said with a wink and nearly, nearly, skipped to the kitchen. May suffered a grin before she followed behind him.
