"How's she now?" Mr Stevenson asked and he walked into the bedroom. Mrs Stevenson who was sitting beside Darcy lying on the bed looked up. She looked terrible. Her face was pale, eyes were still puffy from crying almost every time she Darcy's condition.
She shook her head. Mr Stevenson walked up to her and sat on the other side of Darcy on the bed, "Don't worry she'll be fine" he said placing his hand on hers. She looked at him and another tear rolled down her eyes.
After what had happened that day at the yard Darcy changed and days passed by but she never went back to how she used to be. As days passed she gave up eating, she stopped talking, smiling, playing altogether. Her health was degrading day by day. The family sought for medical help. The doctors found nothing wrong with her and suggested them to wait and gave her some medicines but none of it was working. The family was losing their hopes.
Just few days back the girl was running around the house laughing, shouting at the top of her lungs now was lying on the bed eyes closed, weak and silent. She was alive but lifeless.
The rest of the girls were tensed too. The whole family was having a hard time.
"Mom she'll be fine, you should sleep" Megan tried to console her mother. It was almost midnight. Megan was broken too but was trying her best to be strong for the family. Mrs Stevenson wiped away her tears and managed to give a weak smile to her daughter along with a nod.
"Mom! Dad is calling you, its Darcy" Rose rushed in the kitchen, panicking. The smile on Mrs Stevenson's face faded, all the colours drained away from her face. She got up from the stool and hurried upstairs to their bedroom followed by the two girls.
Mrs Stevenson stopped at the door and looked at Mr Stevenson who was sitting beside Darcy on the bed and was continuously rubbing her palms with his. She rushed to Darcy's side. Sitting beside her she started rubbing her older hand. Darcy's body was getting cold. Several layers of blankets covered her body but her temperature was continuously decreasing.
Tears rolled down Mrs Stevenson's eyes. The feeling that she might lose Darcy made her heart heavy, "Darcy Sweetheart please!" She said, but it almost came out as an whisper.
The girls standing at a distant couldn't help themselves from breaking down. Megan hurriedly got the phone and called their family doctor. The line disconnected. She tried to call the hospital but she was not able to reach that either. She kept on trying but it was of no use. Frustrated she threw the phone on the couch and ran to the side of her parents.
Both of them were continuously rubbing her palms. Megan sat down on the bed and removed the covers from Darcy's legs and started rubbing her feet. The whole family was slowly breaking down but they didn't wanted to give up. They believed that Darcy would be fine and will be like how she was before.
The whole night none of them slept. They stayed beside Darcy trying their best to keep her warm by any means.
The darkness subsided and the morning rays broke in through the windows that was left uncurtained the previous night. Mr and Mrs Stevenson were still beside Darcy. Rose was in their bedroom with Liza.
Megan got up and went to the kitchen and prepared tea for everyone.
Darcy was finally fine. The temperature got better throughout the night and it wasn't anything less than a miracle. Even though none of them showed it but all of them at some point thought that they would lose Darcy.
When Darcy opened her eyes Mrs Stevenson couldn't help herself from crying. She hugged her daughter. Her happiness crossed its limit when she saw her daughter finally gaining consciousness as Darcy sat up to a sitting position. Her face looked dull devoid of life but at least she was awake.
Everyone except Mr Stevenson called it a day. They wanted to stay with Darcy. Mr Stevenson wanted to stay too but he had an important meeting to attend.
"Darcy come on, let's play" Megan said with a smile as she held Darcy's hand and walked her out to the yard. Darcy has been living in her bed since the day she was sick. Megan thought it wasn't good for her health and decided to bring the girl out in the sun and make her walk and playing little if possible.
Darcy suddenly let go of Megan's hand and started walking towards the swing. She sat on the swing and looked at Megan and grinned at her.
Only if they knew she wasn't sick and it was getting late.
