"Remember Rosa, WICKED is good"
The girl woke once again. In a panic she shot up and scanned the room. Alby stood by the foot of her bed, mixing some antiseptic looking liquids into a glass container. Upon her waking, Alby turned to her with a small smile.
"This is a serum, it'll help with your ache in your limbs" he placed the container next to a table by her head. Placing a cotton ball into the container,
He reluctantly motioned for her arm. She nervously moved her limb to his grasp and let him smear the serum coated cotton on to her arm. Alby did the same to her other arm and also to her calfs.
"Now, My names Alby, I'm the one in charge around here, I know you have a lot of questions but ill let you ask them after I've explained something's ok?"
The girl lightly nodded her head and sat up. Alby took the opportunity to perch on the end of her bed where space had now been made.
"To answer your question last night, were in a place we like to call the Glade, we're surrounded by walls and we don't know why we were put here" taking a deep breath he continued.
"Every month a new glader comes up in that box" motioning to the wall of the hut where behind laid the outside. "This month that was you, we all came up the same as you did, our memories wiped, no knowing a single thing" he looked down to the floor
"other then one thing-" looking back up,
"your name, but that'll come back to you in a day or so". The girls face changed to an absence of emotion, she just nodded and sat.
"Any questions?" Ably spoke once again, allowing the girl to flood her mind to him.
"Who put us here?"
"We don't know, we call them the creators"
The girl nodded and hopped off her bed to a stand. Her legs felt like jelly, as though she forgot to walk. Alby stood and held out his hand to help.
"I'll show you around, you've got a lot to learn"
Alby took the girl and walked to the door of the hut, holding it open for her to leave. The sun was blinding, shining like a million grains of glitter. The girl held her hand to her forehead to shield her eyes from the scorching sun. As her eyes adjusted to the light she noticed boys, loads of them, around 30 or more, of all ages working doing different jobs.
"We have 3 main rules here in the Glade, 1. Do your part, we don't have time for slackers, we all have our jobs as you will soon, 2. You must never harm another glader, we have respect for each other and 3. Never go beyond those walls" he pointed to a massive opening in the middle of two gigantic walls. In fact there was 4 walls, large smooth stone around 50 feet tall, each wall had an opening, a large gap the same height as the walls, as though the walls had been broken apart. The walls surrounded the large area they stood, a massive green field, around 6 times the size of an average football pitch. The girl now noticed that the boys had stopped working and had turned to face her. She now realised how self conscious she felt in the small, mucky white coloured vest top and a pair of faded black shorts.
"So am I the only girl then?" Turning to squint up at Alby.
"So far you are, but maybe they'll send more girls in future" he said looking at the concrete square where the box had once been.
"It went back down this morning, the box, so everything should go back to normal". Curious the girl snapped her head back to the opening in the walls. Walking into line with the wall she could see down the vast path beyond the glade.
"What's past those walls?" She asked slowly growing more curious. She could see the large stone walls continued down like a corridor, with large spouts of ivy and black, slimey looking cracks down each wall.
"Something dark, but nothing that concerns you" turning away from her at the last comment, as if he was ashamed to say it.
"Hey Alby, chucks feeling a bit under, do you want me to show the greenie around?" The lanky boy offered, his hair thick with sweat, the ends curling upward, sticking to his forehead. His vest top clearly once a orangey colour, now dirty and sweaty, sticking to his toned torso like a second skin. He gave a small smile to the girl as he approached the two.
"Alright I better go find Minho, see if we still have time to map some of the maze"
"The maze?" She questioned her face serious and confused.
"That's what's out there greenie" the blonde confessed, "beyond those walls is what stops us from leaving this place, a maze" the girl looked confused.
"How would you map it if you can't go beyond the walls Alby?" The blonde turned to Alby, and half smiled.
"Look greenie, I'll tell you all about that soon enough, I'm Newt, let me show you around" and with that the girl took Newts hand and walked towards the other boys.
