"Charlie! Let's go!"
"Coming Mom!"
I begrudgingly take out my earbuds and stuff them into my jacket pocket along with my phone. I can't leave them here. I need those things to function.
I grab my suitcase and drag it down the stairs, ignoring the thuds it makes as it hits each step. I'm honestly too upset and too tired to care about the fact that I probably just woke the whole neighborhood.
If I'm not allowed to sleep, no one else is either.
It's 4:15 in the morning, do you expect me to be a happy person?
The only thing keeping me from flicking everyone off and jumping back in bed is that we are getting ready to go on vacation. We're going to Havana, Cuba. Mom knows all about it; she's been dying to go for the past two years. When we finally got the money to be able to go, there was no changing Mom's mind about going.
The only thing I know about Havana is that Camila Cabello's heart is there.
"Why so early? I don't wanna be awake." I felt the corners of my lips lift a bit as I recognized my little brother Hayden's voice. Even though he's a pain sometimes, he's my favorite sibling. All my sister Natalie does is worry about how she looks and text her boyfriend, Kyle. She's dead set she's gonna marry that boy, even though I've tried to tell her multiple times that he's only with her for her butt.
"We have to so we can catch our flight in time. We don't wanna miss our special trip because Mr. Grumpy-pants didn't wanna wake up, now do we?" I mused as I walked into the kitchen. I grabbed an apple from the basket on the counter and took a bite, desperate for a bit of energy.
"But you didn't want to wake up either. Mommy had to go back into your room three times."
"Yeah, but I'm up now, aren't I?"
"So am I." He muttered with a slight frown on his face.
I chuckled at his cuteness before walking over to him and bending over to place a quick kiss on his forehead. He swatted me away, but smiled nonetheless.
"Come on kids, start loading your stuff into the car. Charlie, can you help get Hayden's stuff?" I nodded at my Dad, who was currently yelling up the stairs at Natalie to stop looking at herself in the mirror and hurry up.
After what felt like a million years, we were finally getting out of the car and hauling all of our luggage into the building.
"Tickets please?" The nice lady with tired eyes looked at us expectantly from her spot behind the counter. Dad gave her the tickets and she gestured to her left. We followed her instructions and found our way to the baggage area, where we got more instructions to go sit down in the waiting area next to our labeled flight.
I put in my head phones and turned on Kiwi by Harry Styles. That song is great.
After about 15 minutes of waiting, they gave us the 'okay' to board the plane and we found our seats. I passed by some lady who looked at me with as much disgust as if she were looking at roadkill.
What a nice woman.
I ended up sitting next to Hayden, who kept looking out the window anxiously as he waited for the plane to start moving. I caught a glimpse of his face in between him turning to look outside the window and towards the front of the plane, and he looked a bit pale.
"Hayden, you okay bud?"
"I'm fine." He muttered quickly. Too quickly.
"Its okay to be nervous, you know. What's scaring you?"
"I don't want to fall out of the sky."
I laughed. "Hayden honey, we're not going to fall out of the sky."
"How do you know that? The sky isn't nice!" I laughed again at how serious he looked.
"What do you mean the sky isn't nice?" A fond smile found its way to my mouth.
"It pees on us!"
"You mean when it rains?" I laughed harder, and his scared face wasn't helping me contain my laughter.
"Yeah whatever."
"Aww, Hayden. I promise we're gonna make it to Havana without falling out of the sky or getting peed on."
"You never know..." He trailed off the look out the window once again.
I grabbed his hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze as the plane started to roll forward onto the runway. And just like that, we were off.
