For once, Joanne didn't come in and wake Charlie up.
I actually got to sleep until 10.
Imagine that!
She stretched and got out of bed, purposely taking her dear sweet time.
"Good morning Charlie!" The singsong voice of her mother rang out from the kitchen.
"Morning mom."
Everyone was already there, happily munching on their breakfast. That included Natalie, to her surprise. Charlie grabbed an apple and sat down at the counter.
"So, today I was thinking we could head down to the pool, and then later, maybe walk around the market and do some shopping!"
"Shopping?"
Of course, Natalie would perk up at the word shopping.
"Wait, why would we need to go down to the pool when we have our own pool?" She lazily pointed in the direction of the windows, where the infinity pool could be seen just outside.
"Well using our own pool isn't how we're gonna meet some new people, huh?"
Charlie groaned.
"Oh come on. It'll be fun! Right, Hayden?"
"Yeah! Yeah! Fun! Fun!"
"That's the spirit! Everyone finish your breakfast and go get your swimsuits!"
* * *
The sounds of laughter, screaming, and water splashing filled Charlie's ears before she saw anything.
The family passed through the gate that led to the pool. Soon, they were laying their towels down on the chairs and stripping to their bathing suits. Charlie looked around after taking her clothes off, and she immediately noticed Hayden was a bit distracted. She followed the line of his eyes to a young girl laughing and throwing a beach ball at a boy a little older than her.
And what do we have here?
"Hayden? You alright bud?"
He jumped. "Wha- What? Oh- oh yeah I'm good." He rushed out with another fleeted glance at the little girl.
Aw! My baby likes a girl! They grow up so fast.
She shot a knowing look at Hayden.
"Go get 'em, tiger."
She chuckled as he hurriedly took off his shirt and ran over to where the little girl was swimming. Charlie turned back around to where her family was, but it was empty. She turned and looked around, soon noticing that she was alone. Natalie was off flirting with a group of high school boys, Joanne was talking to another woman and Charlie's dad, Ethan, was standing in line for the snack bar.
Okay, um. The pool is literally overflowing with little children. So uh, no thanks.
What about the hot tub?
Old people palooza. Right.
She scowled at her options.
You know what? I'm pale as hell. Let's get a tan.
* * *
Three hours in, and the pool is still a madhouse.
Ugh, we could've just used the pool in our apartment. Cause then I don't have to interact with civilization.
Damn.
Joanne was still talking, Natalie was still flirting, Hayden was still playing, and Ethan was still waiting.
But this time, for the bathroom.
Charlie, however, was sporting a beautiful golden tan. She was proud of her accomplishments. She reached over to grab her sunglasses when she noticed her cup. The water inside slightly moved, the delicate circles expanding to the edges of the cup.
Strange.
Wind, maybe?
She paid close attention to the air around her for a few seconds.
No wind, though. Everything is peaceful and quiet.
Too quiet.
It almost seemed like time had stopped, if not for the cries of glee still resonating from the pool. Nothing moved around her, as if it had died. She sat up, wondering what was going on. Charlie assured herself that she was just overreacting, but she couldn't ignore the faint twinge in her gut. She looked back at her cup, where the water was resting peacefully, and she noticed that a slight breeze had picked up.
Okay then. Back to tanning.
She relaxed back into her chair and closed her eyes. About 30 seconds later, her eyes shot open to the sound of...
Silence.
The excited shouts and the joyful chatter around her had ceased. The air was once again dead. Confused, she frantically looked around at everyone to try and see why they had silenced, only to see that they were all looking at the same thing.
A massive wave, 70 stories high, barrelled down the coastline.
And it was headed straight towards her.
there's my pathetic attempt at a cliffhanger :)
