Calling Serenity
Chapter 1 : Just Another Job
"What was that?" Mal asked Wash, who was sitting in one of the pilot's chairs, with the Hawaiian shirt and all. Toy dinosaurs and palm trees populated his station.
"Everything looks good from here... Yes, yes, this is a fertile land, and we will thrive." Wash is holding two of his plastic dinosaurs, a stegosaurus and a tyrannosaurus rex, while Mal, Iris, Zoe, and Jayne are retrieving the goods for Badger.
"We will rule over all this land," says the stegosaurus, "And we will call it, 'This Land'."
"I think we should call it your grave!" the T-Rex suddenly turns on his friend.
"Ah! Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!" the stegosaurus seems to be shocked.
"Ha ha ha! Mine is an evil laugh!" replies the T-Rex, "Now die!" Wash moves the t-rex over to start killing the stegosaurus.
"Oh, no, God! Oh, dear God in heaven!" the stegosaurus cries, as it is eaten by it's back-stabbing friend. Suddenly, one of Wash's screens flashes red. He sweeps off the other dinosaurs on the screen, to find a blip closing up on their ship.
"Oh, motherless son of a b-"
"Whoah! Did you see that - " Wash's face was almost priceless.
"Was that the primary buffer panel?" You couldn't be sure whether Mal's tone was in a way, sarcastic, or serious.
"It did seem to resemble - " Wash started, but Mal cut him off.
"Did the Primary Buffer Panel just fall off my gorramn ship for no apparent reason?"
"Looks like." Wash wasn't really helping in this situation.
"I thought Kaylee checked our entry couplings! I have a very clear memory of it - "
"Yeah, well if she doesn't give us some extra flow from the engine room to offset the burn through, this landing is gonna get pretty interesting."
"Define 'interesting'." Mal looked a bit worried.
"Oh god, oh god, we're all gonna die?" Wash really, was not helping at all in this situation.
Mal rolls his eyes, and hits the com. "This is the Captain. There's a little problem with our entry sequence ; we may experience slight turbulence, and then explode." He paused, then added "Iris, you come on up to the cargo bay when you're ready."
"Shit." was Iris's only comment after she got up. At the top of her head on the hairline, blood was slowly pouring out of a new wound. She opened up her sink, and washed the blood off, and winced as it stung her skin. She put on a blue roll-sleeve tab shirt, brown jeans, suspenders, a black belt which held her gun holster, and tall, and black, lace-up combat boots that went up to her knees. She fixed her hair into a tight braid as fast as she could, and grabbed her two guns. { Outfit in external link }
Iris jogged to the ladder and climbed up it, and into the hallway. She found Jayne looking a bit down in the dumps.
"Are we crashing again?" Iris asked him, closing her door.
"You'd probably want to talk to yer cousin 'bout that." he answered back.
"Those grenades?"
"Yeah. Cap'n wont lemme bring 'em though... Golly Iris, yer head!"
Iris rolled her eyes. "I know Jayne, there's a big, bloody gash in it. I'm going to check in with Simon and just get it disinfected before we go an' do the job." Zoe, who was walking down the hallway, accidentally bumped into Iris as the Serenity shook again. Zoe smiled and apologized, but not before her smile turned upside down when she caught a look of the gash on Iris's head.
