Yuma~
~
"Yuumaaaa!" Gumi cried, hugging me from behind. Whimpering, she shut her eyes.
"Huh? What's wrong?" I asked, slightly blushing from how close she was to me.
Whimpering again, she pointed to a group of boys who were laughing. "They took the locket you gave me and they won't give it back!"
"Alright, I'll get it back for you," I sighed, walking towards the boys. Gumi followed, hiding behind me. As soon as I went up to the boys, they laughed again.
"Hey, you're the guy in this picture, aren't you?" one of them asked, showing me the picture inside the locket. I blushed slightly, remembering the picture I had put in there. It was a picture of Gumi and me when we were smaller, back when we first became friends.
"Yeah. Give the locket back," I snapped, getting to the point.
The boy smirked. "What a pretty necklace. It would be a shame if something were to happen to it..." he teased, waving it in front of my face.
"No! Don't!" Gumi yelled from behind me.
The boy dropped the necklace and was about to stomp on it, when I lunged at him. I was able to take him off guard, and we tumbled to the ground. I guess he hit his head pretty hard, because he cringed and didn't try and push me off. I took my chance and grabbed the locket, while the other boys stared in awe at my sudden move.
"Here you go!" I said, smiling as I handed Gumi her locket. She beamed at me, her emerald eyes thanking me. I felt a blush spread across my face, and I looked away.
I ended up getting in a crap-load of trouble for hurting that kid, and when Gumi found out, she nearly had a heart attack.
"You didn't have to hurt him like that just to get the necklace back! I...I could've gotten it back myself!" she protested as we walked home.
I chuckled. "No you couldn't have. And besides, I wanted to help you, so I did."
Gumi pouted. "But you didn't have to go to such extreme measures!"
I stopped walking as we reached her house, and I smiled at her. "I'd do anything to help you. Even if it meant risking my life. Got it? That's a promise," I said, holding out my pinky finger. She thought for a while, then smiled and took my pinky in hers.
"There! Now nothing bad will ever happen to you, because I'm always going to protect you!" I promised, patting her head.
~
My eyes shot open, taking in my surroundings. Oh yeah. I was still in my room. Sitting up, I groaned, and remembered my dream. It was from years ago, back in the 7th grade. I had given her that locket in the 5th grade, and she had kept it up until the accident.
Reaching into the pocket of my jacket, I pulled out the locket and opened it. The same picture was still there.
I had my arm around Gumi's shoulders, grinning like a child. Well, I actually was a child. Gumi made a peace sign with her left hand, and had her right arm around my shoulders also. She was also smiling foolishly, and I couldn't help but chuckle to myself.
A knock at my door snapped me out of my thoughts. Still holding the locket, I walked up to the door and opened it. Kaito and Gumi stood there, both looking worried. Well, Gumi looked more worried than Kaito. Kaito seemed more fixated on the ice cream he had.
Where does he get all this ice cream?
"Are you ok? You just ran off and we got a little concerned..." Gumi asked, her sparkling eyes filled with worry.
"Yeah, sorry. I'm fine. I just had a headache," I lied, rubbing the back of my neck. I decided I wouldn't tell Gumi about our past yet. I wanted to get closer to her first, and work my way from there.
"Well, I was just about to take her to meet the others. Do you wanna come?" Kaito asked, still devouring his cone.
"Sure," I nodded, and walked out of my room. I noticed I was still clutching the locket, so I quickly stuffed it in my pocket before anyone saw it.
Kaito led us to the field outside, where our friends are pretty much always at. It's like they lived there or something. Just as expected, there they all were, talking and laughing. Meiko's eyes lit up once she saw us.
"There you guys are! Who's this little munchkin?" she asked, smiling down at Gumi.
"H-Hey! I'm 16, not a munchkin!" Gumi corrected, grinning.
"Gumi, this is Meiko. Meiko, this is Gumi! She's new, and she threw ice cream at my face! Can we keep her?" Kaito pleaded, giving Meiko puppy dog eyes.
Meiko laughed at that last statement. "Sure. Come on, I'll introduce you to everyone! That right there is Luka..." She pointed to Luka, who smiled and waved.
"That's Gakupo..." She pointed to him, and he also waved.
"Those two are Rin and Len. They're twins," she leaned in closer to Gumi, and whispered, "I secretly think Len is a girl, though!"
"Hey! I can hear you!" Len yelled, blushing. Rin giggled beside him.
"And I assume you already know Kaito and Yuma here," she finished.
"Yep! Come here little kitty!" Kaito exclaimed, grinning stupidly and held his arms out for a hug.
Kitty? I couldn't help but laugh at the nickname.
Gumi hid behind me. "That guy scares me. You'll protect me, right?" She whispered, loud enough for Kaito to hear.
"Sure," I chuckled. My heart skipped a beat as I remembered a certain promise I made.
"There! Now nothing bad will ever happen to you, because I'm always going to protect you!"
I made a promise to her that I would always protect her. Geez, how cheesy was I?
I frowned as a thought occurred to me. I made her a promise, but I broke it. When Gumi fell out of that tree 4 years ago, I was too shocked to respond sooner. Why couldn't I save her? I could've prevented it. I could still be with her, at this very moment. Why didn't I? Was I too much of a coward? Was I too scared of falling myself, that I hesitated before attempting to save her? She was terribly afraid of heights. I should've stopped her from climbing the tree. I should've been more worried about her safety.
I couldn't protect her. I broke my promise.
"I'm sorry," I said in barely a whisper, clenching my fists and bolting away.
I was a coward.
~I'm really late, I know xD And I'm changing the title to Remember, because I feel like it fits the story a lot more. Trust me, I had different intentions when I first started writing this, but you know, things happen xD Also got a new cover :3~
