The sky is clear, although not bright, the sun rests in the light blue above, the clouds hanging overhead. The dirt on the ground below me crumbles with each step, still better than the rocks and twigs I avoid to walk on, not wanting to attract any zombies over. I turn to my teammates beside me, Amy and Signe. We met before all this happened, in LA shopping for clothes. How long ago was that?
"We should find a safe place to camp for tonight," I say, watching the sky get darker as the oranges, reds and yellows come out to play. Amy looks around, her gaze stopping on a forest.
"How about we climb the trees? Pull a Katniss and tie ourselves up?" She suggests. I look through my bag, the equipment bag. Amy carries extra weapons in her bag, like guns, daggers, kitchen knives, anything we could rack up from our old town before fleeing. Signe carries the food, cans of corn, beans, soup, anything we could stack up from grocery stores, gas stations and empty homes. I carry all of our extra stuff, like our extra ammo in case the ammo we already have runs out, a rock we use to sharpen Signe's sword, a lighter and some matches we found at a gas station, blankets and..
"Rope!" I say excitedly, finding the long piece of rope.
"Signe, can we use your sword to cut pieces?" She nods, getting it out. We cut the pieces of rope, and each climb our trees, making sure to put our hoods on our hoodies up so we blend in with the darkness around us.
"I'll keep watch tonight." I say, pulling my mini gun I scored from a weapon store down North that I only use for keeping watch at night. It has good aim, and the sound shouldn't be too loud at night, since most zombies stray from the forest. The other two nod - from what I could see from my tree - and lay down. I whisper a quiet goodnight, only to get cricket chirps in return.
***
My eyes get heavier and heavier, only too shoot back up when a quiet moan escapes from the ground below our branches. Thank the lord Amy and Signe don't snore. I watch carefully as the zombie limps on by, not taking notice of us three in the trees. I give a quiet sigh of relief as he trudges on into the forest, swallowed up by the night. If that's the only action to happen to night, I minuswell go to sleep. I put my head down, my eyes immediately drooping down as I doze off to sleep. It's too bad I was unaware that when my grip loosened, I dropped the gun to the dirt floor, giving out a loud bang all of us too deep into sleep to hear the echo.
