Everyone inside the mansion was paralyzed by shock the next morning. They had nothing to say of what just happened. And there was nothing they can do about it. They haven’t felt so much fear and they had never worried this much in six months.
“I—I,” Joey stammered.
He was stopped by his chills. He can already feel the nervousness crawling up his spine, and his worries up his throat. Joey could tell that the scientist and Louie both had the same feeling. Although that war was in another two months, he was still very afraid.
Time went by and Joey and Louie never forgot the moment they had to pack their stuff and head off to the battle field. Those both couldn’t imagine themselves being cramped between a bunch of tall soldiers with dirt on their faces. They imagined themselves sitting on the couch just relaxing and watching TV. But that obviously couldn’t happen because they were permitted to go to war.
“Joey, are you sure you’ll be okay?” the leader said. “I mean war is a very cruel thing, and a twelve year old DEFINETLY won’t be able to do it. I’ll talk to the French people again and see if they can do something about it.”
“No,” said Joey quietly. “You heard the Declaration. Louie and I HAVE to participate. There’s no putting a stop to it, and it you try, you might just end up in jail.”
“Alright, fine!” the leader exclaimed. “But we got to do something about you going to war!”
“I already told you!” Joey kind of shouted. “You guys don’t need to worry about me! If I die, I die with dignity!”
“But I can’t let you do this!” the leader shouted. “I can’t—“
“JUST SHUT UP! I CAN HANDLE THIS!” Joey shouted.
Everyone was in silence after that. It passed about thirty minutes after the talk with the French, and Joey was already getting cranky. It was insanely quiet now. These people didn’t talk to each other no matter what. Not even did they talk even when something good happened and they wanted to tell the rest. It stayed gloomy for the rest of the day.
Joey went out on the front porch and sat down staring into the sunset. He couldn’t bear to think about how happy and brave he was six months ago. Joey couldn’t also bear that he had no family anymore. He had no god parents and both of his real parents were murdered. He put his hands over his face, and started crying. Then Louie walked up in the front porch.
“Are you all right?” Louie said on a worried expression. That’s the first time Joey has heard that kind of voice in six months.
“Yeah,” Joey said sniffling and wiping his tears. “I’m fine.”
“It’s insane that we actually have to go out and go to war and fight the French!” Louie exclaimed.
“I mean we’re only twelve years old? How are we supposed to participate in war?” Joey questioned.
“Well you have to have at least some confidence!” Louie said. “In the French and Indian war the French were defeated. And they will be defeated again!”
