In reality you two 'hanging out' after your shift just consisted of talking for two hours in the now empty, and dark, shop. It wasn't that you hadn't suggested going for a walk or doing something else altogether, it was just the conversation between you flowed so easily that it seemed stupid to break the atmosphere you held together.
"So how long is it before you go back to Korea?" You asked, a little tentatively, worried that the answer would be much too soon for your liking.
"About a week, the dates could change though," he said over the top of his coffee cup.
"Oh, okay," you tried not to sound disappointed.
"I might be coming back to the UK soon though, depending on dates," he said, gauging your reaction, hoping just a little that you would be excited by the prospect.
"Oh interesting," again, trying to act cool, you responded. In reality, a week was nowhere near enough to get to know the man who had just whirled into your life suddenly. It was obvious that what was forming between you two was at least a friendship, if not something potentially more.
However, the prospect of him returning soon, and you even possibly staying in correspondence with him made your heart flutter a little. He was certainly an intelligent individual as you learnt as you talked further. You learnt he was into making music, with intricate lyrics, and he was even fluent in English and Japanese. How someone so intriguing just stepped into your life you would never know.
Eventually, you realised it was getting a little too late for it to be acceptable for you two to be sat in a dark café by yourselves. Not to mention, he had to get back to his busy schedule. He had already scolded himself enough indirectly about how much time he had been slacking off recently. You tried to not take it personally but you knew his down time was being spent with you and couldn't help but feel you were keeping him from his work.
"So, what do you want to do with your life?" He asked rather abruptly, changing the subject.
"Wow, you sound like my parents!" You joked. His face blanched and you swiftly moved on to reassure him, "Don't worry, I get this question all the time."
He laughed a little bit, trying to get back into the groove of the conversation.
"Believe me I don't want to work in a coffee shop for the rest of my life," you giggled a bit.
"No, I can't imagine you would."
"I don't know really," you calmed down a bit, taking a more serious note into your voice, "I mean. I know I want to do something creative and travel the world but..." You trailed off.
"But what?"
"But I don't know if I can," you confessed.
"Why not?" He seemed honestly curious, wanting to get to know you better, if only a little.
"I don't know if I'm creatively good enough," it was an honest statement, straight from the anxieties in your heart.
"I'm sure you are, why don't you show me some stuff you've done?" He suggested, interested in seeing the types of things you've created.
"Oh, um, ok. But only if you show me some of your music," you thought it was a fair trade but it seemed to make him even more embarrassed.
He reached into his backpack and took out his laptop, which you had seen him work on from time to time during his visits to your workplace. You were honestly interested in what he was doing on it for such elongated periods of time but never pressed him, but now you knew. It was his music. He plugged in some headphones and offered one ear bud to you for you to share before he hit play.
