On Loving Your Best Friend

It was high school when we first met

In a class I'd never forget

Where you did something so courageous

I swear it bordered on outrageous.

You sat at the very front of class

Beside the aisle where the teacher would pass

In seat where everyone could see

You chose it to be next to me.

And as the teacher passed you by

You stretched your hand way up high

To steal a flower on the shelf

In a move so swift, so full of stealth.

And with flourish you handed it over,

A beautiful Irish clover

And along with it was a folded note

That held a silly friendship quote.

Because that's all I was to you

A friend who has always stayed true

And I doubt I'd ever be something else

Unless I resorted to potions and spells.

And each day that passes by

And I continue living this lie

A pretend life where I smile and nod

And make sure you noticed nothing odd.

And I bit back the tears that threatened to spill

Everytime you were so full of thrill

Because of some girl you met at the bar

Someone you thought who was up to your par.

And you'd talk about her all the freakin' time

And how you couldn't wait to make her "mine"

And you never even noticed how I stared

Because all you saw is that I just cared.

Cared for you as a buddy, just as friend

And you never realized this all started to bend

A long time ago when we just met

And you gave me a puppy for my very own pet.

And so I continue this mournful state

Though I doubt this would ever abate

For I'd never be brave enough to tell you

That every teasing "I love you" was actually true.
