Chapter One
For 6 years I've been trying to hide that from them. Winning the Hunger Games, escaping from the Quarter Quell, being the cause of, I don't know how many people's death, and leading an invasion into the capitol to over throw President snow, and then killing the newest President of Panem, President Coin, isn't something to be proud about.
Peeta, as always, covered for me.
"Mommy just dreams of something bad happening to you guys."
Although that's true, that's not what I dream about. My dreams, which I've lived, are about what has happened in the games; Peeta almost dying, rue dying in my lap, Cato's gruesome death underneath us in the cornucopia, and some not even real, like Prim dying in the games, Peeta getting killed, gale getting beat to death. Still too many to list, but many more.
I tell them to go play outside and I'm quick to stop from saying not to go outside the victors village, but instead tell them not to go out side the gate.
I look at Peeta after i hear the door close.
"Tha-" is all I manage to roll off my tounge before Peeta stops me.
"We're gonna have to tell them. We can't keep our history from them forever you know," he says."I know, but they won't understand. They're still too young. You know this as well as I do," I quickly say. That much is true. I guess Peeta thinks the same things and doesn't make any sound for about two minutes and then sighs.
"Yes. Yes, that's true, but all I'm saying is we're eventually going to have to tell them the truth."
And that's when we hear a scream. Not of a boy, but of a girl. I can tell because it's high pitched. It's very familiar, like a my daughter. Primrose. Peeta and I realized it at the same time and we screamed "Prim!" while scrambling to get out of the house. And just in time to see a hovercraft with a capitol seal disappear into the horizon.
I run to the neighboring house. That's where my old mentor, Haymitch Abernathy, lives. As predicted, he's passed out at his table with four empty bottles of white liquor beside him. I find a mason jar, fill it with cold water, and pour it on him. I still forget that he sleeps with a switchblade. He hollers at me and slashes his knife blade at me.
"Haymitch! The Capitol took the kids! Get the hell up right now! We have to go!"
"Relax, sweetheart," he says "Cut me some slack. You most likely just gave me hypothermia."
Without thinking, I grabbed him by his ear and walk him to Peeta, who is already dressed and fully equipped with weaponry. He tells me he put my stuff on our bed. I let go of Haymitch. And rush inside to find my mockingjay suit and beetee's bow on my bed. I change and equip myself with the bow and arrows. Then, I go in the closet, unlock the safe and pull out four knives and tuck them firmly in my belt. Finally, I grab my father's leather jacket and go back out to find Haymitch full functional and he has his two guns. We then haul off to the the remnants of the train station. We get in the train and Haymitch and I settle in and Peeta goes to put the Capitol coordinants in th e GPS and then we move.
And my heart beat moved faster as I think of what the Capitol might be doing to them.
This just became the longest ride of my life.
