CHAPTER 4

“Red team, Blue team, come in. Green team has fallen, repeat, Green team has fallen. There are no refugees left on lower campus. Most has been evacuated, the rest are infected. We are proceeding to faculty housing. Black team over and out.” She solemnly placed the radio back in her pocket. The rest of black team climbed aboard the two gargantuan vehicles and they plowed their way back down the road. It was getting dark now, and in the dusk, they began to hear the zombies much more than they saw them. There was still a remaining horde left from the leftovers of students from both Armington and VK. But Stephanie had the power to bowl right through them, while Danny cleaned up from the rear, and John and Jackie protected the flanks. They made their way to the construction site stopping shortly to pick up fuel from the physical plant for their rides.

“We could go straight through the construction site and head up to the housing that way. Simple, little resistance, easy way out.” Said John.

“No. We will be looking for survivors along Westmont road. That is an entire suburb that could have been infected already. We are going to go straight in there, and search for anyone who might have made it through alive so far. We are not going to do that unprepared.” Said Stephanie with resolve. “Caleb, you said there were bunches of flammable things in the chem lab. Do you know where they are?” She turned to Caleb who lit up with mischievous glee.

“Oh I know where all sorts of dangerous things are!” He stated through his grin. He revved the chainsaw and brought it down on a zombie attempting to climb on the back of the ditch witch.

“We’ll need to light the way.” Said Stephanie. “The construction site has floodlights. There will be some construction zombies still there. No doubt that place has been infected ever since I blew the gate open. So here’s the plan.” She turned to face the rest of her team coming to a halt before the busted gates. “We go in there, turn on the floodlights, direct them at the chem building. We head up and raid the labs for anything useful and gear up for a full-fledged assault on zombie suburbia. We ready?” Her team shouted its approval back. Stephanie gave a challenging threat to the zombies as she slammed on the gas and drove through the construction parking lot. Danny and Caleb jumped off the ditch witch in a pair and ran to the first floodlight. Stephanie drove on further and Jackie and Jeff got off to activate the second one. She stopped just short of the third, and John hopped off, turned on the third, and began to climb up to reorient the bulbs. The moment the lights became active, they heard the screams of zombies and saw the reflected green glow in their eyes. The zombies shrieked and began to charge the new morsels. Stephanie unsheathed her sword and began her defense at the base of the light. She swung and swiped, jabbed and slashed, stabbed and hacked at the beefy zombies that ran towards her. They clenched their jaws and swiped their hands, but to no avail. Stephanie was too swift for them and her blade too sharp. It sliced through bone and marrow leaving their hands crawling on the floor and she gave their necks a hard time keeping their head on their shoulders.

More were coming, and mobs began to pour towards the other two floodlights. She couldn’t keep it up forever. But she was lucky. John was done pointing the lights, at the chem Building. He slid down from the top and began to hack his way with Stephanie back to the dozer. They sliced off a few climbers who were trying to take control of the dozer and then barreled their way down to the others. Stephanie heard a scream, and a cry of fear. Jackie and Jeff. She came just in time to see Jeff get pulled down from the floodlight and fall into a hungry crowd. Jackie was on the ground screaming as the monsters feasted on her. Jeff fought his way up a bit just long enough to throw his staff sword to the dozer where John caught it.

The strong throng overpowered him and he sank into the mesh of grabbing arms. Stephanie was enraged. She stomped on the accelerator renewed with vigor in hopes to reach the first group in time. She heard the rev of the chainsaw and was filled with relief. She zoomed up to the last light to see shifting shadows and the form of Caleb charging down zombies with his maniac weapon. Danny jogged up and was pulled onto the dozer by John. He had successfully moved the floodlight bulbs while Caleb ran around on the ground like a psychopath.

After a moment, Caleb made a clearing run around the perimeter of the bulldozer and climbed aboard. They stormed up the road to the chem lab.

“Where’s Jackie and Jeff?” Danny asked. Stephanie didn’t answer. She slammed the dozer into a higher gear and continued to rush up the road. Danny got the message, when John handed him the sword.
