Chapter 6
Stephanie had every one sound off. All accounted for save for Jackie and Jeff. They had a moment of silence. Now with the new equipment, they were ready, willing and abled to take the faculty housing. They hopped back into the vehicles and drove along the road up to the faculty housing. The air had a light fog rolling through it and many houses were dark and had a very foreboding look about them. The houses that did have lights flickered and only dimly glowed. The team cautiously made their way through.
They opened the door of the first house they saw.
“Hello?” Called Stephanie. “Any survivors left in here?” She began to creep through the house holding her sword at the ready. The rest of her team whispered, “clear” as the swept the rooms looking for people. “Whatever you do, don’t flip on the lights. That could attract more to our position.” Stephanie whispered to the others.
Their progress was quick, but the team still felt restless. They didn’t find anyone in the first four houses they had checked so far. Not only was that a sign saying that they may not have survived, but also it was strange because they didn’t find any infected in the houses either. Stephanie could not make sense of it until she entered the master bedroom of the fifth house. There she saw what looked like the aftermaths of a hurricane. Dresser drawers were thrown open, and the closet had been ransacked. Seeing the one drawer on the floor she noticed that a devotional book was still inside, but she found no bible. She looked around some more, and the office just outside the master bedroom also looked strange. She saw that there was no laptop on the desk, and the chair had been flung to the side. She stooped down and peered under the outlet. There was one open plug. She sighed in relief. The family had gotten out. They moved the chair to the side, unplugged the laptop, then took some clothes, a bible, the laptop, and a few other things with them. She stood up to stare straight in the face with a very hungry zombie.
Just outside the window glared an undead professor.
“Regroup!” Stephanie bellowed. “To the kitchen!” She ran in and joined with the others. She heard the zombies shriek to the others. They were coming.
She sealed off the kitchen by overturning the dinner table with the help of John and placed it against the doorway to cover up that entrance. This left only one widow and the other doorway open.
“Everyone get on the counter!” She commanded. They did. Stephanie opened the cabinet doors under the sink and kicked at the u-bend in the pipe. It broke off and she turned on the sink to full blast, which began to flow water out of the busted pipe onto the kitchen floor expanding a puddle across the linoleum. She pushed aside the plastic covering to the fluorescent lights above and pulled out a few tubes, and placed them on the counter. She grabbed the socket on one side and with a kitchen knife pried it away from the light frame. She hung all her weight on it and pulled it to the ground. She tossed the socket to the ground and it lay in the puddle still connected to the ceiling by its wires. They heard the front door being pounded on and the windows broke. Cut and bleeding zombies began to pour in. Stephanie jumped back up on the counter. Danny opened the window above the sink so they could make a quick escape. The zombies found them. They shrieked and clambered into the kitchen. Stephanie waited until they were about a foot away when Stephanie drew her sword. She sliced the head off of one and kicked another back into the crowd, bowling them over like pins. With a flick of her wrist, she reached out with her swords tip and flipped on the light switch. There were sparks and sizzles and the smell of burning flesh.
“Go!” She shouted to her team, which bounded out the window and over the fence to the backyard of another house. Just then they heard a rattling boom and an orange glow originated from the campus in the distance.
