Chapter 8

Stephanie’s actions lead to a full scale military occupation for the regeneration of the populous. The Leviathan was instructed to turn around and had splashed down back in the ocean, and Stephanie went back at the controls playing a hard core game of tag with the infected sea creatures. The coast guard had set up a blockade to contain infected creatures, and Stephanie made short work underwater, shooting cure darts at any and every ocean creature she saw.

After her conversation with the president, they docked the ship with a local aircraft carrier and had the Leviathan retrofitted for cure dispensing. Stephanie quickly combed the quarantined ocean zone and tagged all visible life forms with cure laced injection darts. The entire ship itself also released a solvent form of the cure, which would permeate itself through the entire oceanic ecosystem.

This was only one of the measures that had been taken to now successfully combat the infection. Highly trained infiltration teams armed with tranq guns swept through the city and surrounding suburbs to tactically restore the residents to life once more. With a cure in hand, the military presence skyrocketed and within 14 hours, the whole infected zone was affectively revived.

Over the next few days, reconstruction went underway. Broken windows from looting were repaired; fires extinguished, and collateral damages were taken care of. One remaining problem encountered was that of sanitization. Infected bodies still peppered the cityscape, and posed a very real threat of re-infection. Haz-mat teams scoured the city and properly disposed of dead. Infected bodies were cataloged and properly incinerated.

The mayor of the city instigated an annual day of remembrance for all who where lost. The names of the deceased were engraved along the steps of City Hall. A memorial service was held all along the beach, and since the lost loved ones could no longer be buried, at the end of the day, thousands of little floating candles drifted out to sea in their memory.

On the lawn before the City Hall steps was adorned with a statue of a soldier, a college student, and a young child with embracing each other in mourning as they stood on top the broken remains of a biohazard sign. On the foundation was placed a plaque which read, “On October 21, 2009, humanity faced the greatest potential threat of the age. Thanks to the swift actions of our military personnel, and the unparalleled courage of a few students from Westmont College, mankind’s survival has been secured.”

Yet, the potent and seemingly unstoppable virus was halted and overcome within 23 hours of the first infection. Due to the actions of some unexpected heroes, the end of the world would just have to wait.
