Chapter Eight

Hermione’s mouth gaped. She had sworn she had seen Draco’s mother leave Hogwarts. She stepped back and her back hit a wall. Narcissa walked toward her.

            “Me?” Hermione questioned.

“Yes,” Narcissa said, “because of you my son is dying. He hasn’t slept for days by the looks of him and he hardly eats. There is no denial of Veela love so quit trying to play hard to get. Draco already has you in his grasp.” Draco’s mouth hung open as his mother shot daggers at his love. Narcissa’s fists were clenched so show how enraged she was.

“Excuse me?” Hermione challenged. The hand holding her book dropped down to her side and her face was puzzled. “He chose not to eat or sleep and no he doesn’t already ‘have me in his grasp’. Now I really do believe that this is all just a dream, really. Draco never really liked me. I was just another silly girl. This is a dream and I haven’t been woken from it yet.

“Voldemort is still alive and trying to get Harry, Ron and I still have feelings for each other, and….” Draco’s face faltered. Narcissa’s face scrunched up in anger. “You think I’m crazy, don’t you?”

“Everything you are saying is complete rubbish, Hermione!” Draco yelled at her. “I love you and you’re treating this like some sort of ticking time-bomb game! My life is on the line!” Then he stormed out of the lavatory and his mother followed him out. Then Moaning Myrtle floated out from a stall.

“Well that didn’t go very well, did it?” she said. Hermione’s face fell and she sat down and rested her head against the sink.

“Oh shut up, Myrtle. Why do you always feel the need to eavesdrop?” Then Hermione stood up and waited for her to answer.

“Well what else do I have to do with my time?” she questioned. “I’m dead; and Draco did not know that his mother was in here. So, maybe you should think before opening your big mouth!” Myrtle then flew into one of the stalls and shook the pipes, blasting water around the bathroom. Then Hermione started to weep. She ran out of the bathroom all the way to her dormitory, getting strange looks from other students along the way.

That weekend Hermione decided to go to Hogsmeade with Harry and Ron to get her mind off of Draco. They went and got some butterbeer and joked around for a bit. As they were all on their third Hermione gets a little letter fluttering next to her ear. Harry and Ron look at her until she reaches up and opens it.

Meet me at the Shrieking Shack?

                                                                        -M

Hermione looked up at Harry and Ron.

“Excuse me,” she said. “I have to go.” She started to leave when she heard footsteps behind her.

“Where are you going Hermione?” Ron asked as she left Hogs Head. Hermione kept a steady pace as she chose her words carefully to reply to him. “We haven’t seen you a lot and you look terrible every time we do.”

            “Gee, thanks Ron.”

“But seriously, though. Where have you been?” Hermione stopped in her tracks. They were far from Hogsmeade now. Almost to the fence line where you can clearly see the Shrieking Shack.

“I’m sorry, but that’s none of your business. Now please, leave.” Ron’s face turned into a scowl as Hermione started to leave again, but instead of him leaving like he should have he grabbed her arm.

“I can’t leave unless I know where you’re going!” he shouted at her.

“Ronald, let me go!” Hermione screamed back, struggling against his grip. She tried pushing him off but his other hand grabbed her other arm. Then Hermione hears a shout from behind Ron and the next thing she knew Ron was banded in ropes, struggling to get free on the ground. She looked up and saw Draco hopping over the fence from the Shrieking Shack. He ran over to her, completely dismissing Ron.

“Are you alright?” Draco asked Hermione. She looked over to Ron who had now started shouting for help. Draco looked down at him and held his wand out. “Langlock.” Ron’s shouting had stopped. Then he directed his attention back to Hermione.

Hermione’s eyes averted their attention to Draco’s. She then nodded and wiped her eyes, not realizing that she had been crying.

“For as long as I live,” Draco said, holding onto her arms just as Ron had done, “I will never let anything happen to you. I promise.”
