It's been three years since Nathan and I became friends. I've joined his friend circle with Victoria and others. I can easily say it's been an enjoyable breeze of years. Hints of romance float around between Nathan and I—even though him and I don't talk as much lately—and I can tell Victoria is raging with jealousy—but I don't care.
Tonight is the vortex club party. Nathan is pretty much one of the hosts, along with Vic and I of course. I'm excited. I haven't been to a VC party in a few weeks due to tons of studying and other family business. So hopefully tonight I'll get to relax some, drink a little, and maybe eventually confess to Nathan how I truly feel.
Another thing—I haven't had any of those peculiar dreams at all in the past three years. While I'm glad I stopped having them, I'm also curious as to why I even had them in the first place, and why they suddenly stopped happening. But at this point, I don't even bother asking why anymore. What's the point? Things happen, and we move on. If tonight I tell Nathan that I love him and he shoots me down, I won't ask why, and I won't be upset. Well, maybe a little upset, but I'd get over it. Still, I hope he accepts my confession.
Only a few hours left. As I sit alone on a bench, I see Nathan laughing as he walks out of the school. Our eyes meet across the distance and we stare, him then looking away while he goes about his conversation. I look down and pick up my phone, opening his contact and typing a message.
'Bonjour' I sent. I watched as he pulled out his phone, taking a step back from his friend group and began typing.
'Salut' he replied. I smiled.
Sophie: What're you up to?
Nathan: NM. just talking to these losers. Wanna come over?
Sophie: I'm good. See you tonight though.
Nathan: quit being such a fcking girl and come over here.
I noticed Nathan look up and over at me, giving me a childish smile: a smile I longed to see throughout the days. We don't talk as much as we used to and I don't get to see him much during the days, and when I do, he's usually always upset about something. It was hard to get him in a good mood now-a-days, so seeing him generally okay was a good start. Might as well take my chance now.
I looked out to the courtyard before grabbing my bag and standing from the bench, then sheepishly walking over to him and awkwardly saying hello to the rest of the group. While everyone else chattered amongst themselves, Nathan and I stood silent, waiting for one of us to speak first.
"Are you excited about the vortex club tonight?" I finally asked.
"For sure. You?"
"Kind of. I haven't been to one in a while."
"I know. All that studying help?"
"Duh."
"How about your family? They're good?"
"Mm-hmm."
There was another awkward pause of silence.
"Uhm..." Nathan turned his body fully towards me and his voice lowered. "So, hey, after the party do you wanna come to my dorm?"
"Oh...! Er, sure." I smiled sweetly.
"Cool." He nodded his head and turned back to his friends. He ended up joining their conversation, leaving me standing alone, watching as they all joked. It was nice to see Nathan adapting so well and getting along with other people.
Suddenly, my phone vibrated. I looked down to see a text from Victoria.
Vic: come over
Soph: now?
