Two weeks.

That was the last time you heard his voice, soft and strained as you clutched the phone to your ear. His ragged pants trickled through the line slowly and you felt a prickle of fear creep up your spine.

"Jae. What's wrong?" you whispered, the feeling of apprehension increasing with every passing second.

"Jisoo... I think I'm in trouble."

Your older brother groans, and you hear him draw a shuddering breath as if he's having trouble speaking.

"Wh-what do you mean?" you stutter. "Where are you? What's wrong--"

Dread and worry taking over your senses, your heartbeat increases as you hear him take another deep breath before cutting you off sharply.

"Listen, I don't have much time. This is important. There's something I need you to do."

Jae's voice is urgent.

"You have to promise me, no matter what, you can't tell anyone about this."

You start to panic as your mind reels, moving at the speed of light.

"Jae, you're scaring me. Where are you? Why do you sound like that? I think I should call the police or an ambulance," the words fall from your lips haphazardly as you try to keep your hands from shaking.

His breaths are coming faster and more shallow, and it sounds as if he's clenching his teeth in pain.

"Listen to me!" he screams into the phone. "It's too late for that. You have to promise me! No matter what, promise you won't try to find me."

In all of the years you've been siblings, you have never heard him this serious. Hearing the desperation and fear in your calm and cheerful brother's voice is nothing short of terrifying. Lips trembling, you choke back a sob as a tear slips down your cheek.

"What? No! Jae, what' s the matter with you--"

"Please, Jisoo," he begs, his voice low and serious.

"I don't want to drag you into this."

Your entire body shaking, your mind draws a blank as you hear the sound of footsteps approaching on the other end of the line. Jae's breath is coming out in pants now.

"Jisoo, I have to go now. Don't forget. I love you."

Before you can reply, the line goes dead.
