It was getting worse. Every ten minutes or so, Sky was having flashes of memories. They left her weak and shocked every single time they hit her.
Christian had long gone home and now she sat on the lounge.
They were short but getting longer. First a flash of Christian's worried face. Then a flame, flickering and turning off. She saw a laughing Sophie, her long chocolate hair curling over her shoulders.
And a knife, clutched in someone's hand.
They constantly slapped her over and over again. And then suddenly she was seeing everything skewed.
She was on the ground, her vision blurry and her head painfully heavy. Tara was lying metres away, a pained expression on her face and blood on her hands. She turned her head to a noise and only saw a pair of familiar eyes. They were blue. And then they disappeared and the memory went black.
Sky blindly reached for the phone, remembering what Christian had said. "Your eyes...the pupils are really big." It must have been the reason everything was always blurry when she resurfaced from a dream.
She dialed Christian's phone number from memory and held it in her shaking hand to her ear. Finally, he answered.
"Hello?"
"Christian," she gasped. "Can you come back?"
"Yes, whats wrong?" he asked. She heard shuffling noises in the background, presumably him getting ready to come over.
"I just remembered. A lot."
Fifteen minutes later and Christian let himself in. Sky wrapped her arms around him, taking sobbing breaths.
He calmed her down enough to explain what happened.
"I saw it," she said. "I saw Tara, just before she must have died. I was on the ground too, and my head hurt. And I saw blue eyes. I think...I think they were Tiarna's."
Christian looked into her eyes. "That's what you thought already, isn't it?"
"Yes-but- I was holding onto a shred of hope...and now it's just confirmed."
He hugged her again and ran his hand over her back soothingly.
As soon as her mum got home, she told her what happened then went to have a nap. She felt so incredibly tired, like she hadn't slept in a week. Her mum tucked her in and then made a phone call, presumably to the police station.
She dreamt something vivid and intense, but when she woke up her dreams had dissipated like clouds of smoke. She couldn't remember a single thing that she had definitely dreamed.
Sky lay in bed for half an hour, just staring at the ceiling and thinking. It was calming and warm and she snuggled up in her cozy blankets. Her feet threatened to become blocks of ice when the blanket rode up leaving them bare, but now they were warm and toasty.
Later when she got out of bed, her mum told her that Sophie had called.
"What about?" Sky asked, chewing a bite of toast.
"I'm not sure, honey. She asked for you to call her back."
When she was finished eating she took the phone to her room and dialed Sophie's number.
"Hello?"
"Hey, it's Sky."
"Hi. Yeah, I called you? I wanted to know if you wanted to join me and a couple of the girls for lunch today at the new cafe in town."
"That sounds really cool."
"It should be. Bring your boyfriend if you want; that's what Chels is doing. Just don't turn it into a double date, hey?"
"Sure," Sky laughed.
Sky texted Christian with the details and then pulled out a plaid skirt and am oversized jumper from her closet. As she brushed her hair with her comb, she wondered whether anyone would mention Tara or Tiarna. She hoped not; she didn't want to think about any of it. She wanted a normal, fun and social activity free of worries.
