Ultraviolent

Sky pulled her thick jumper's sleeves over her hands in an attempt to warm them. Cold air poured into the front door and she looked out doubtfully where rain drizzled in miserable waves of cold. Glad for her last-minute stockings that she had slipped on, she ran out to the car, where her mum already had the heater turned to high. The windows were all steamy and the light inside the car was like a cozy beacon. It was still summer but the weather had taken a cold turn as though to imitate her life, to spite her.

"So, how are you feeling about the end of the holidays?" her mum asked. "School starts next week! We should buy supplies tomorrow."

"Sure. I don't really care that the holidays are over."

"Does Christian go to your school?"

"Yeah. I think he's in year eleven, though."

"Really?" her smiled. "You're going to make all the other girls jealous!"

Sky made an affirming grunt, as the statement ran through her brain. Jealous?

Just like Tara.

When they got to the cafe, her mum dropped her off before driving to the shopping centre. Sky scurried into the warm cafe. Everything inside was polished wood and brocade gold, as well as - to Sky's delight - a fire place that was roaring and making the quaint cafe even cozier.

Sky made her way to the girls and guys she recognized. They were chatting and laughing.

"Hey, Sky," Christian said, waving to the seat next to him. She took the seat and kissed his cheek in greeting.

"Hi!" said Violet, a short girl who usually sat in her group of friends. It seemed as if they had all forgiven her, for which she was grateful. A couple of other girls and guys greeted her too.

A waitress came to their table and everyone ordered off menus. Once she left, conversation sprouted across the table.

"So how have your holidays been?" Vera asked her. Vera was a tall girl with dark eyes and long, glossy black hair.

Sky smiled. "They could have been a lot better," she said, before entwining her hand with Christian's. "But it could have been far worse."

"Hey, everyone," smiled Sophie as she sat down across from her. "Sorry I'm late, guys."

"Hey," said Sky.

"Oh, hi! How are you going? I heard about what happened with Tiarna and you that night...well, I did the next morning. After I'd recovered from my hangover. Are you alright?"

Sky shrugged. "It was...traumatizing. I'm just glad she's not able to hurt anyone else anymore," she said awkwardly.

Thankfully, the waitress carried food and drink to their table and soon enough everyone was distracted, sipping hot drinks and chewing food.

She leant sideward to his seat and whispered into Christian's ear. "How are you?"

He smiled and turned and whispered back in her ear, sending shivers down her back. "I'm great."

She smiled at him and leaned forward. "Me too," she said, mere inches away from his mouth. They pressed their lips together in a chaste kiss, but that didn't matter to the rest of the table.

"Woooo!" cheered one of the guys, and a couple of girls giggled at them. Sky and Christian laughed and separated.

"You know what? They have a music player and yet they don't have music playing. I'm going to get onto that," said Vera, standing up.

"So, school starts soon," Sky said to Christian. "Are you disappointed about the holidays?"

He smiled. "No."

"How come?"

He leaned forward and rubbed his nose against hers adorable. "Because of you." She giggled.

Suddenly music was playing. It added to the atmosphere.

As the music sang something about "Ultra violence" in a smoky voice, Sky stood up to go to the bathroom. Once she'd locked herself in the large cubicle she looked in the mirror, washing her hands and making sure her make up wasn't smudged.

Her face stared back at her, with wide eyes and flushed cheeks. Her hair was still ruffled from the wind outside and she attempted to smooth it down.

"Ow!" she softly muttered, when her nail scratched her temple. She leaned into the mirror to inspect the crescent shaped cut.

It gave her déjà vu. But then, alot of things did, these days.

She dabbed the scratch with tap water and covered it with her hair that was hopefully smooth again. Scolding her vanity, she walked back out to her friends.
