Jonah's P.O.V.
I hate Rockwater. I don't live in it, but I hate it. It's filled with a bunch of people who probably think they're better than us because they got picked to live in there instead of us. I hate it.
The Outside is way better. You get to live any way you want and there are no rules! Who doesn't want that? The answer: The People. They are the ones who stuck us here. But I'm not complaining.
We have everything we could need, but it's just leftovers of Rockwater.
When they got a new school in Rockwater, they demolished the old one and sent the broken bricks, splintered wood, and dried cement here. They were enough parts for us to make our own school, but it was basically falling apart.
Our houses were old, rundown apartments that used to be a part of Rockwater a long time ago, before The People decided to make Rockwater smaller.
I set my gray backpack down on my small bed and start to shove papers and books into it. Once I'm finished, I zip up my backpack and toss it on one of my shoulders as I head out the door.
I walk down the street for a while until I meet a very familiar mustard-yellow apartment building. It belongs to Buffy Driscoll, my best friend. "Buffy! Hurry up!" I yell at her opened window. She always leaves it opened just in case either of us have a bad dream or something. I do the same thing every night with my window.
"I'll be there in a minute!" She replies. I let out a sigh as I lean against the wall of the apartment. Yesterday she told me she wanted to look her best for her first day back to school. I just love school. Note the sarcasm.
After waiting for a few more minutes, she finally walks out with her own navy blue backpack. We start walking and I stare at her confusingly. I don't notice anything different.
"I don't get it, what's different?" I ask. "I'm wearing different shoes, duh!" She says like it's the most obvious thing in the world. I look down at her feet and realize she isn't wearing her usual sneakers, but she's wearing high tops instead.
"Why the change in footwear?" I ask out of curiosity. She looks at me for a second before turning away. "I just want to look good," I smirk because I think I know exactly why. "Is it because you want to impress a certain someone?" I say in a somewhat annoying voice. She looks at me and her cheeks go a light pink color.
"I knew it! You like someone!" I shout and her cheeks go an even deeper shade of red. She rolls her eyes and tries to hide a smile, but fails. "I don't know what you're talking about," she says. Now it's my turn to roll my eyes. "Whatever you say, Buffy."
~Time Skip~
"I still don't understand why we have to take a test on Romeo and Juliet. It's easy: Juliet has a party, Romeo goes to it, they talk on her balcony, they want to get married, then they kill themselves. Easy." Buffy says at lunch. We have a test on Romeo and Juliet today and she didn't study.
Right now we're in an empty classroom, as always. The cafeteria is always too crowded, so everyday during lunch we go in the classroom that our favorite teacher, Mr. Rogers, always leaves open. He's the best.
"It's way more than that," our other friend, Marty, says. He, unlike Buffy, studied. "Yeah, and besides. The test is really easy," I say. Buffy looks over at me and gives me an 'oh really?' face. I nod my head and she let's out a small sigh. After that it's silent for a while, until Marty speaks up.
"Okay, let's talk about something else now," he says. I nod again, but I can't think of anything else to say. But apparently Buffy has an idea. "Jonah, do you like someone?" She asks. I shake my head and stare out the window. I can see Marty looking at me with curiosity from my peripheral vision, but he soon looks away.
The truth is: I actually might.
