The sun shone brightly through the window and I found apprehension gnawing at me. My throat was sore from all my screaming and I felt like I’d been hit by a bus. When Hayden was gone from beside me I felt panic welling in me.
I lay shivering in my bed trying desperately to let go of my dreams from last night. I closed my eyes and let the humming of nature outside my window try to soothe me but to no avail. All I could hear was that voice saying that I would never escape him.
I dragged in an unsteady breath and tried to force myself to calm down. I let out a sob as the door opened and I wondered if it was an intruder. I huddled down further in my bed and when someone pulled the covers off I screamed in fear.
“Leena it’s just me. It’s Hayden. I’m sorry beautiful I thought you were playing.” He said his voice calm as he sat down on the edge of the bed. I felt my sense of dread ease as he pulled the covers back over me and tucked themaround me“I’m sorry I scared you.” He told me quietly as he rubbed my back.
“The dream.” I whispered.
“Is that what’s got you worried?” He asked and I nodded.
He dropped down on the floor next to the bed so he could look me in the eye. He tenderly traced his fingers across my cheek and smiled at me. I knew he wanted to ask me something as soon as his fingers rubbed between his brows.
“Just ask me?” I told him and he looked surprised then rueful but he still sent me a small smile.
“Have you had a dream come true before?” He asked seriously and I debated what to tell him but finally I nodded “Can you tell me about what?”
“My parents leaving, you arriving, when my friend cockatoo died.” I stated only to see his eyes widen worriedly.
“Wait you had one about me before I arrived?” He interrupted and I bit my lip but nodded “And that’s what you meant about your parents the other day that you knew it was coming?” I nodded again.
“C’mon guys I know there’s no school today but we have to go – soon.” Charlie stopped short as she saw us “What’s going on?”
“Leena’s had a lot of premonitions come true Mum.” Hayden told her seriously and her face fell.
“Damn! I had hoped it was your first.” Charlie muttered.
“She even had one about me before I arrived.” Hayden explained and her eyes widened.
“That means you’re accurate. Tell me what your one about Hayden was.” She asked seriously and I watched feeling unsettled as she began pacing.
“Hayden appeared through a grey flecked mirror with two suitcases and a backpack. He gave a little old lady a hug and she wished him good luck.” I told them and Hayden went very pale.
“That’s exactly what happened.” He said as he pinched the bridge of his nose “So that means that last night – God Mum that can’t come true surely.” He almost pleaded with his Mum who looked rather panicked herself.
“I don’t know Hay. We have to ask Selenia.” Charlie muttered
“Who’s Selenia?” I asked quietly, finding it strange that the name sounded similar to mine. Charlie stopped pacing to face me with those same brown eyes as her sons.
“That’s your mother who we are supposed to be meeting soon. Uh we may have to Time it.” She mumbled grumpily to herself.
“Time it?” I asked Hayden.
“Yeah time travel, that’s Mum’s talent.” Hayden explained and I turned to look at Charlie in amazement.
“It’s not that great when your whole life is spent solving the worlds problems.” She told me but it still sounded pretty wonderful to me “Okay can you be up and ready in about – “ I quickly pushed myself out of bed and got dressed before she could even finish the sentence “Uh I’m surrounded by super speeders.” She muttered.
