"Phillip." Anne gasped, placing a single hand over her mouth. "I can't."

Phillip shook his head, confused. He stood.

Anne tried to hold back her tears. "I love you so much, Phillip. But we can't get married. That's not even legal. Let alone sensible."

"Legal?" Phillip gaped. "You won't marry me because your worried about legality? I'm ok with breaking a couple laws if I get to spend the rest of my life with you."

Anne shook her head. "There's not a person out there to have to good sense to marry us."

"Anne. Don't do this." Phillip pleaded. "I love you and you love me. I don't see the problem."

"People don't like us together and they never will."

"I don't care about them." He insisted. " I care about you and me. And if no one is willing to marry us then who says we have to get married."

"You can't just not get married," Anne said. She had never heard of such thing.

"Sure we can. Now I know that's there's no law against not getting married." Phillip said. "We can pretend we're married. Share our lives together, start a family."

There was a pause where no one spoke.

"Isn't that what you want?" Phillip asked.

"Of course it is, but-" Anne starts but Phillip cut her off.

"But what? But it's not right? It's not legal? The only I care about is whether you love me." He stated. "do you?"

"Of course I do." She said without hesitation.

"Then, will you marry me?"

"Phillip..."

"Anne. Please."

"You know I want to." Anne stated.

Phillip shut the lid of the ring box. "But you can't."

"Don't be upset with me, Phillip." Anne pleaded, reaching for his hand.

Phillip stated it away. "How could I not be upset, Anne? Where else was this suppose to go?"

Anne opened her mouth to speak bout she couldn't find the right words.

Phillip swallowed. "Look, I get it. Before we part ways, I want you to know that I will always love you."

He turned and walked away. Leaving a tear risen Anne to walk home by herself.
