Chapter one
'DAIS! Dais wait up! ....Dais..? Oh for christ's sake where did you go?'
My voice pierced the peaceful calm that had settled over the suburbs of Battery City, spooking birds out of their leafy havens and soaring up, up, up past the setting sun, black ink blots against the tantrum of inferno like colours that filled the city's dusk horizon.
i tugged the sleeves of my rolled up shirt down to protect myself from the chill that was starting to creep into the air like an animal.
Daisy was always doing this, she'd find something interesting then run ahead and suddenly wonder why I wasn't right beside when I've told her time and TIME again that I. Don't. Run.
She'd known me long enough that she knew that I'd run after her if I had to, and that was freaking annoying.
I loved her though, best friends despite my dislike for a jog, nothing could change that. We'd lived in the suburbs I battery city all of our lives, but we'd never even talked until about 5 years ago, and since then we've been unstoppable, nobody messes with us when we're together.
Usually when she runs off I'll her and she'll have a cool thing to show me and we'll muck about and laugh and hang out on the street for a bit, but it was getting late. We'd spent a bit too long fooling around on the fringes of the desert, and now it was getting dark. I'd told her we needed to be home as soon as possible, that the streets aren't safe at night, and that curfew says we should be home before the sun sets, but she never listens.
As the velvet darkness started to settle upon Battery city like a blanket, I carried on in the direction I thought I saw her run. Trudging down a narrow alleyway, behind a huge, disused, derelict warehouse,
when the heavens opened.
Freezing droplets of icy rain started leaping from the sky, turning into huge great splatters that coaxed goosebumps onto any skin they touched. As a flash of forked lightning scarred the night sky I ducked into the warehouse for protection against the elements. Typical. Dark, cold, SOAKING wet, and I'm in trouble for being out past curfew, Fan-Freaking-Tastic.
Suddenly, from deep within the realms of the cavernous warehouse, I heard a crash, which resonated and echoed right through the place, the sound reflecting a thousand times before dissipating.
'Dais?'
I shouted into the black.
'Daisy May Sabin get your butt out here this instance. I love you and all but If we get locked up because you can't read follow a freaking curfew time then we are no longer best friends, okay? also, have you seen the state of me? I LOOK LIKE A DROWNED RAT!'
I yelled my well-meant abuse into darkness, but was replied with nothing but silence.
Venturing into the unknown depths of the warehouse, I started calling out some more as I squinted in the poor light'
'Daisy? Daisy for fucks sake I wanna go home! .... Dais ?... Is that y-'
Gunshots filled the room. Lights from the guns shooting beams across the warehouse floor, the sounds if shouts and cries of pain filling the huge building. I screamed and fell to the floor. Someone had hit me in the back of the head,
hard.
As blackness threatened to fill my head I looked up at my attacker, lit by the lightning. A guy wrapped up in a bandana and mask, with a shock of red hair.
The last thing I remember before letting the darkness take hold was being lifted over his shoulder and hearing him mutter into my ear.
'Daisy? not exactly, No'.
