The early summer of 1958

School had just ended for the losers club. Never have they ever been so excited for the summer, this was certainly going to be the most eventful  summers they would ever have. Walking home with s-stuttering Bill and Ben Hanscom was fun.  They talked about what they were going to do in this holiday. As Ben waved goodbye and left to go his way, Bev and Bill were left alone for the first time in ages.  They were usually with the other losers.  This was obviously not a problem as they all got along very well with each other.

"H-hey B-bev do you maybe wanna g-go to the quarry l-later? I-I can ask the other l-losers" Bill said with great difficulty. Beverly paused for a moment and thought. That would be nice, would be better if it was just us two, though. I mean Bill is so cute and I really like him but it'd probably be best if the other losers came.

"Yeah that'd be nice! What time shall we meet?? Who will get the others??"  Beverly asked quickly wanting to go home and get ready before her father came home.  Her father wasn't a nice man, she hated him.  She thought that the earlier they met the less she'd have to deal with him.  As she pulled out a cigarette from her rolled up sleeve, she lit it waiting for Bill to spit out his words.
"W-why don't we j-just go now??" Bill thought this would be a good idea as he didn't want to go home.  He hated it like Beverly hated to go home except his reasons were different.  Beverly smiled slightly, relieved that she didn't have to go home and face her horrific father.
"Yes that would be good!!" She said excitedly. "Let's go get the losers!"

As Bill and Beverly walked side by side towards the first losers house, Ritchie, they didn't say much but it was a bit awkward but it was nice. As they walked up to Ritchie's front door Beverly looked at Bill and smiled then tapped gently. After a few seconds Ritchie opened the door and smiled.
"Ahhh if it isn't thee Beverly Marsh. What do you want??" He looked over Beverly's shoulder. "O hey Billy, didn't see you there, thought I was gonna have lil miss Bevvy here all to myself." He said in a funny and sort of sarcastic way.
"P-peep peep R-Ritchie." Bill said quietly as he showed a faint smile. Ritchie shouted up to his mum that he was going out with his mates and she just shouted okay back to him not really caring what he does. Now it was Bill, Beverly and Ritchie walking along the busy streets. Not really busy but just enough to lose count. Ritchie pushed his glasses further up his face. His glasses were barely holding together. From the amount of times he had been hit in the face by Henry Bowers he needed tape to hold them together.
"So who next then??" Ritchie said to the other two walking next to him.
"Well I mean Eddie is the closest. Let's go for him." Ritchie walked up the path to Eddie's and knocked loudly. He heard loud thumps which he assumed was Eddie's mother.
"Ahhh Miss K how's it going, lovely weather isn't it." Ritchie said quickly but before she had time to answer Ritchie was already talking again.
"We need your lovely little Eddie to help us build a damn. Is he aloud out??"  Miss Kasprak looked at Ritchie in disgust and just slammed the door in his face.  Ritchie turned around and looked at Bev and Bill.
"Guess that's a no then."

As the three of them walked up the road to Stan's house they hear shouting.  A loud voice that sounds very familiar.
"I'm gonna fucking kill you losers!" The voice boomed. It got louder and louder then suddenly Ritchie felt a hand creep up on his shoulder.  It made him jump.  Henry Bowers was a horrible child who threatened kids with a knife his father gave him.  He was older than the kids in the losers club but he keeps getting held back in classes. Held back in years.  Ritchie looked over his shoulder and sighed.  In a British voice he said;
"Ahh pip pip me old chap how are you this fine afternoon.  The weather is just swell."  Henry, however was not amused and pulled him down to the ground.
"S-stop it you a-ass hole you're gonna h-hurt him."  Bill struggled to get the words out of his throat, but he managed.  Henry looked at him and got out his knife.
"Aw am I b-being too h-harsh B-Bill?"  He mimicked meanly.  Bill turned towards Beverly who was helping Ritchie up off the floor.  She looked up at him.
"Let's just leave Bill."  Bill nodded and slipped away from Henry.

The three of them ran home each going to their own houses saying goodbye as they left.  As Beverly got home she walked in the door to see her dad waiting, sat on the sofa.  He stood up and walked over to her.
"Where have you been Bevvy??"  He said as he ran his fingers through her long ginger hair.
"Have you been hanging around with those boys Bevvy?" She shook her head timidly as he got closer.
"You know I worry about you Bevvy, I worry about you a lot. Now promise me you weren't with them boys."  He looked her dead in the eye and grabbed her face.
"Promise!"
"I promise." She said quietly.
"You promise?..." He said waiting as if it wasn't good enough.
"I promise daddy." She said with fear in her eyes.
"Good now go get cleaned up, you stink of boys." He said in a mean manner.  As she walked past him he smacked her upper thigh with his hand. She yelped and walked quicker to the bathroom.  As she sat in the bathtub hugging her knees.  She was crying a lot and it was all because of him. She hated him so much!
