Chapter 3
Emily woke up early Thursday morning. She kissed her grandparents bye and was wished to have a good day. She grabbed her lunch that her grandma had made, and a cup of coffee and a muffin from the bakery and headed on her way out the door to school. When she walked outside, she literally ran into Ben knocking her coffee all over both of them.
He was standing in front of the bakery looking up at her apartment. "I am so sorry," he said.
"No, it was my fault, I should have been watching where I was going." Emily said, not looking up at him. "Just a minute."She said as she ran back inside and grabbed some napkins and refilled her cup, and made another cup and grabbed a muffin for Ben.
"I am sorry your shirt is ruined. The least I can do..." She said as she handed him the napkins, coffee and muffin. Then she turned to head to school.
"Wait. Can I walk with you?" Ben said as he tried to catch up.
"I guess. We are both going to the same place." Emily said keeping her eyes ahead, but looking down.
"Mmmm, this is really good." Ben said as he bit into his muffin.
"Yeah, Grandpa does most of the baking and these are fresh from this morning. Pumpkin muffins are my favorite this time of year."
"I heard the angel again." Ben said as he took a sip of his coffee. "Cream and sugar, just the way I like it."
"Good, I wasn't sure."
"So, did you hear her?" Ben asked.
Emily looked over at him, "Uh, no. Sorry."
"Why do you do that?"
"Do what?" Emily took a sideways glance at him kind of nervous.
"Apologize for things that you have nothing to do with." He said looking at her. "Anyway, I came by this morning to see if I could hear her again. And she was singing this melody that was so beautiful. Are you sure you didn't hear her?"
"Nope, got dressed for school and headed out the door."
"Odd. Did you play your radio? Maybe that is what I was hearing."
"No." Emily said looking back towards the ground.
"I will find her, eventually." Ben said.
They were walking up the sidewalk to the school, when Ben heard a loud car behind him. He knew before turning it was Mark and Tim in Mark's Mustang. "See ya later Emily," he said as he started walking towards his friends.
As soon as he got to the car, Tim and Mark started in with the questions..."What are you doing with her?" Tim wanted to know.
"Walking to school." Ben said. "She is really nice. A little shy and quiet, but she is really a nice person." He stared walking with Tim and Mark to the school building from the parking lot.
"I guess if you like a plain Jane ragamuffin." Mark said. "Are you guys dating? John said he saw you sitting with her last night in front of the bakery."
"No. We were just talking. I ran into her this morning and offered to walk with her." Ben said as they reached the hallway.
"Charity case then," Tim said more than asked.
"No. Not at all. I heard something and I wanted to check it out. She was there and we started talking."
"Spooky ghost?" Mark tried to guess "Ghosts of bakers past?" Mark and Tim began to laugh. "Ragamuffins of yesteryear?"
